L'Oréal Featured a Transgender Model For the First Time in Its New Campaign

Jan 14 2017 - 1:30pm

Whenever a beauty company does something to expand beauty diversity, the world takes notice. L'Oréal's latest campaign for True Match Foundation, "Your Skin Your Story," debuted during the Golden Globe Awards featuring transgender model Hari Nef.

In the ad, women (and a man) from different backgrounds discuss their heritage and how there's a True Match shade for their unique skin. Hari utters the brand's slogan, "Because I'm worth it," toward the end of the clip. Each member of the True Match ad ensemble also has their own short True Match ad, and Hari shared her video on Twitter [1].

You might recognize Hari from the show Transparent, where she plays Gittel, Maura's (played by Jeffrey Tambor) great-aunt. She was also the first openly transgender model to be signed by IMG models in 2015 and even walked in Gucci's Fall Menswear show last year.

This is a huge step forward for the beauty industry, and it's important that other brands follow suit. Creating this ad proves that L'Oréal understands that there isn't just one type of person who wants to enjoy makeup and that it's important to make sure that people of all skin tones and gender identities can appreciate and use its products. Transgender models [2] are rarely seen in beauty ads, and Hari's debut is a wonderful step in the right direction for inclusivity within the beauty industry.

Read on to see gorgeous photos of Hari and her reactions to starring in the ad.
