Have You Ever Colored Your Hair With Something Other Than Hair Dye?

My friend and I used to break out the lemon juice in high school to provide a little lightening effect to our hair. Thinking back on it, I'm lucky I even had hair. Sunning with a perm, while squeezing on lemon juice? Could have been a tragic combo.

This got me to thinking about the "other" ways in which one can color his or her hair. Aside from traditional dyes, here are some alternative options that come to mind: veggies and spices (beets, carrots, rhubarb, paprika), caffeinated beverages (coffee, tea) and/or extreme methods (Kool-Aid, Jell-O, food coloring).

So tell me if you've altered your hair color a non-typical way, whether it's by using a more natural approach or through means of some wacky concoction instead?

In junior high all my friends and I used lemon juice (huge amounts while lying by the pool). In high we used Sun-In, with mixed results.

I wasn't allowed to dye my haor when I was a teenager so I used kool aid, Beet juice, henna, lemons, and god knows what else the kool aid was the most fun - my hair smelled like cherries for weeks!

Sage tea wash. I've been known to keep a bottle in the shower and make a final rinse with it. It's not exactly permanent, but it does a pretty good job of tinting the greys.

Lemon juice and peroxide. Then we would sit at the beach and worship the sun. How healthy.

I've used both lemon juice and straight hydrogen peroxide as a kid. You had to be sooo careful with the HP though!

I tried Sun-In in junior high and it fried my hair. It also left a horrific orange colour instead of blonde, which was what I originally expected. Manic Panic is great. I've used it various times and it always has great results. So does Splat. Jazzing.... Not so much.

When I was 15 & really bored @ work, I took one of the (old style)cash register ribbons w/purple ink and gave my self streaks by pulling little sections of hair through it. It got me sent home, but looked kinda good!

Ah, hair mascara - that was, well, interesting. I'd have to do a few coats to get it to show up, since my hair is pretty dark, and then the mascara would just get on everything. Needless to say, I did not make a habit of that. I had a friend in junior high who kept using Sun-In, even though it turned her hair orange! Maybe that's what she was going for, idk.

Chammolie tea...it works great to lighten up the hair, especially if it's dark. It gives it this beautiful natural reddish tint as well...

I've used lots of lemon juice, but when I was 13 and wanted to dye the tips of my hair blue Kool Aide didn't work! So we used blue cake dye (Like professional-grade, permanent food coloring).
