How-To: 1940s-inspired New Year's Eve Glamour

Old is new again. Makeup from the 1940's are back in style, and this style is one of the most glamorous and polished beauty looks of the season.

So if you're still deciding what your makeup style will be to ring in the new year, here's everything you'll need to know about creating Dita Von Teese's sexy starlet look at home.

For a list of product suggestion and application tips,

  • FACE: Begin with a clean and well moisturized face and add a touch of primer to your skin so that it's even and your pores appear nice and tight. Next, using a concealer brush, apply a little bit of creamy concealer to any red areas on your face. When it's blended, dab a little bit of your favorite foundation onto a sponge and blend it all the way down to your neck so that you don't have any jawline marks. Lastly, set your foundation with a translucent powder.
  • CHEEKS: Contour your cheeks with a matte bronzer and a neutral blush. Add a little bit of highlighter to the tops of your cheekbones and blend outward for a dewy effect. And as a fun finishing touch, take a black waterproof eyeliner and carefully and precisely, create a false beauty mark near your lip.
  • EYES: Begin by sweeping a vanilla shadow all over your lids as a base and then add some champagne shimmer just below your brow-bone and inside the inner corners of your eyes. Next, apply a light layer of a deep brown shadow to your crease, blend well and then dab more of the champagne shade in the center of your upper lid. Line your upper lashes with a liquid black eyeliner (lining your bottom lashes is optional) and the most important part of this look is applying false eyelashes for a length and drama.
  • LIPS: Fill in lips with a creamy nude liner. Dip your concealer brush in concealer and brighten up the edges surrounding your lips. Apply your favorite red lipstick to your lips in a very precise manner with a lip brush and top lips with a red gloss for sexy shine.

Too bad this is not a 1940's look, it's 1950's! The 1940's look is alot more simple, leaning towards one solid colour on the lid, same colour lightly swept under the eye, and minimal liner and mascara, the lips are off as well in the 40's women wore the "Hunters bow" look on the lips (exagerated from the cupids to the outer corners, and from the center of the bottom lip to the outer corners, giving it a fuller rounder look on the edges). Women in the 1940's were too busy working and taking care of their children while the men were off at war to worry about their looks as much as they did in the next decade. In the 50's after the war ended is when the more glamerous look became popular, and women began wearing black winged out liner, the "pout" lips ( exagerated in the cupids bow and center of the bottom lip only), so this is a great look for Classic beauty, but id definatly the 50's not the 40's!

I love vintage style make up and LOVE red lipstick. I don't wear any foundation or stuff like that so the eyeliner and red lips never look overdone on me. The 40's look is definitely an old go to for me.

Dita is about the only one who can wear red lipstick because her whole look does make her look like a classy pin up girl.

What is with everyone? This look is great on lots of different types of people. If you don't think it looks great on you, try different, more natural lipstick. The hairstyle is uber fun, but just tone down the makeup if you don't feel comfortable with this look.

I like the look but I have never managed to find a red lipstick that doesn't go pink on me.

Dita looks great here, but I would never spend that much time on my makeup.

1 more thing this look works on all skin tones like Renees3 says. You just have to find the right mix. I did and my skin tone is waaaaayyyy darker than Ms.Teese.

LOVE this look & I rock it HARD (Hey how many people you know can put on liquid eye liner on a moving BART train. You can say you now know 1 person. It took FOREVER (last 2 yrs of H.S) to master but once you have it down its easy breezy my friends just have some patience.)

I think different tones can pull it off, its just about getting the mix right. I mean people did it back then, so why not now! I love this look, I think it's so classic and beautiful!

I've been trying to remember to use this look all fall and winter, so far I've done it a handful of times. It always looks good, but is very high maintenance!

I love the whole pin-up look, and Dita does it really well. Too bad it looks horrible on me...I have medium tone skin and light hair, so I can't pull it off.
