How-To: Teasing Your Hair

Big hair is back! And since the glossary post about hair teasing turned out to be so popular, I thought I'd create a little do-it-yourself guide so you can see just how easy it is to create some volume at your crown.

For step-by-step instructions,

  • Step 1: Using a soft bristled hair brush, give your head a thorough brushing until all tangles and knots are gone.
  • Step 2: Next, take a metal comb or teasing brush and divide hair into two-inch sections. Set the section you are about to tease aside, and clip the rest so it stays out of the way.
  • Step 3: In one hand, hold the section of hair you are going to work with by the ends. Make sure the hair is straight up in the air so that you can access the area underneath. Using your free hand, take the comb and back-comb your hair in short strokes in the opposite direction from which it grows.
  • Step 4: Pick up the next section of hair and repeat the process until all of the desired sections of hair have been teased. When you are done, gently smooth hair over with the comb and generously spray your hair with a firm hold hairspray to ensure longer lasting volume.

Scarlet looks about 30, Rachel looks 40 and SJP looks mid-50's. Considering they are all 10 years younger in real life I think I'll skip learning how to tease my hair.

hey! also counting the # of teasing motions helps too! and bb hair powder which helps with real slippery or fine hair that doesnt like to tease!

Thanks y'all! We have similar fashion tastes, so its a cheap costume! Just tease out a black wig (using Bella's guide!), amp up the liquid liner, draw on some (more) tattoos, and there we go!

I have naturally thick, curly hair that I spend FOREVER trying to blowdry and flatiron that I don't even want to try big hair. However, I do tease my hair when I pull just the front part back. It gives it that "pouf" so it's not flat on top of my head.

I try to tease my hair, but it seems to think I'm trying to pick a fight. I have wicked curly fine hair, and the amount of process (blowout, flat iron, then tease) required for me to get this look means that my hair would act up for weeks. But it might be worth it occasionally, for a costume.

Some of this depends on hairstyle - if I brush through my hair with a soft-bristled brush, you can forget getting ANY volume at all until it's washed and restyled.

No. I can't do it. I have tried and my hair is just too thick. It looks like a Bride of Frankenstein fright wig and I just can't get it under control without washing again and starting all over.

Back-combing is a sure-fire way to turn a blah hair day into a fabulous one! I didn't feel like going crazy with my mass-quantity extra extra fine hair like I usually do, so I back-combed at the crown spraying with Bumble & Bumble hairspray as I went along. Then i brushed back all the hair I had pulled forward while I was backcombing, and pushed a headband into my hair to hold it all in place. A little less height than SJP's but just as mod and supper sexay. :) Viva la big hair!

LittleMascara, I love the idea of an Amy Winehouse Halloween costume! I might have to steal it!

Sorry guys, but you must mousse first especially if you have thick, heavy hair. If you don't do this step, you're hair will loose its oomph in a few hours. Hairspray is a good finisher, but it add weight, so you must first volumize at the roots. Trust me, I did the 60s mod look for years.
