How To Apply Concealer Under Eyes

How-To: Conceal Under the Eyes

Whether it was a boozy late night or you inherited them from your Aunt Martha, dark circles under the eyes are often unavoidable. So, if you've been seeing the blues (or purples), I've got some easy directions on how to reduce the appearance of these unwanted tones below:

  • Choose the right concealer: Pick a color about one-half of a shade to one shade lighter than your foundation. Going too light will only amplify the area you want to conceal. Yellowish shades will work best for masking those bluish-purple tones. Try the cream-based Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer ($22) or Maybelline Cover Stick Concealer ($5.49).
  • Moisturize: Earlier, I shared with you some of my favorite makeup tips from Robert Jones, and among them, he says to prep the skin before concealing with a generous dollop of eye cream. Concealers are more dense than foundations and are formulated to cover, so you want to make sure that you're nice and hydrated to avoid cakey lines.

To see the rest of my tips,

  • Apply: After your eye cream absorbs and your foundation is done, it's concealer time. With a light hand, apply a few dots of product only on the dark areas (usually in the inner corners and the areas right around your orbital bone). Keeping in mind that less is more, gently "stipple" with your ring finger or a concealer brush to blend, and then blend some more.
  • Smile test: If you're happy with the results, then smile. If any product has shifted or moved into some fine lines, lightly tap with a tissue to remove.
  • Optional highlighting: If you want to add a bit more brightness to your eye area, add a eye brightener on the inner and outer Vs with a brightening product such as Benefit Cosmetics Eye Bright ($20).
  • Set it: Give your hard work some lasting power with a light dusting of translucent powder. Try Physicians Formula Pearls of Perfection Multi-Colored Powder ($10.95).
  • In a pinch?: If you're out of concealer, apply a thin layer of foundation all over your face and then go back and apply another layer just to your under-eye area. You can also use the thicker residue from your foundation's bottle cap as a concealer substitute. Concealer not the right shade? Add a little yellow eye shadow to help.

Drew Barrymore was asked- what is in your makeup bag (current people issue Feb 09) she said "Amazingconcealer." She lives, dies and breathes by it. She is right, the concealer is Amazing. You only need a tiny amount!!

Someone mentioned the Benefit products..they're great. Vincent Longo & Smashbox, also good! Sephora is the best place to go to get them, but then it gets overwhelming once you are in the store because they have it ALL:)

i'm so white that the lightest tones are too dark for me (number 1 or so) so there's no way i can get a concieler lighter than my primer :(

not true about using yellow--or cool--concealer to hide under eye circles. a cool toned concealer over blue and purple--also cool toned--discoloration under the eyes will just make the skin look ashy and tired. use a warm tone concealer, even if the rest of your face is cool. don't go to light with your color, either. match evenly for tone with your foundation. you don't want to ask your product to do to much. also, never use a concealer with silica for the under eye area. the ingredient is intended to absorb excess oil and moisture and will age the delicate skin around the eyes.

Always apply concealer first if you use powder foundation. I like Clinique Line Smoothing Concealer :)

I'm using Smashbox's Complexion Perfection kit and they say to use concealer before foundation. Does it make a difference? I like Eye Bright too. And the Photo Op Brightener from Smashbox is really great too.

One beauty concern that I do not have is dark undereye circles. That never happens to me, thankfully.

So if you put it on over your foundation, how does that work if you use a powder foundation? Won't it get cakey? Does anyone make a powder concealer?

I love the bobbi brown concealer. I have the one that comes with the powder. The powder helps set the concealer. And also I saw bobbi on TV say that it helps prevent makeup from smudging under your eyes.

Just in time...I finally bought some undereye concealer. I don't know what took me so long. I didn't know I was supposed to put it on over foundation, though. Good to know, as is the "smile test."

I really didn't like Bobbi Brown's concealor when I tried it. It was really really thick and made my undereyes look horrible. I tried it because I saw a review in a magazine that said it would be great for undereye circles, but it was so, so wrong.

I have to say that benefit has several eye products that are better then anything else. Their under eye cream actually faded my circles noticeably, the under eye specific concealer covered what didn't fade and their brightener worked great under shadow. I can honestly say I don't love any of their other products (I like bentint but its to pink-y for normal wear and i found their other stuff was the same, close but not perfect) but they do know their eye care IMHO.

Hmmm I was using a more yellow MAC concealer for under my eyes and it made me have that sallow look, kind of jaundice. Ha. Maybe it's because I'm THAT fair skinned...
