A Derm Explains How to Avoid Summer Breakouts in the Heat

Jul 12 2019 - 2:20pm

The warm weather likely means you're spending more time outdoors at Summer barbecues, pool parties, and beach-side hangouts. Unfortunately, staying outside in the heat also means you're more likely to sweat — which can lead to nasty, and even painful, breakouts [1]. After a few too many pimples (in less than desirable areas), we reached out to dermatologist Dhaval Bhanusali [2], MD, to find out just how to combat this less-than0desirable side effect of our Summer fun. He recommended products you should pick up [3] and avoid as you plan out your outside activities.

Check out his best tips for fighting Summer breakouts before they start, ahead.

Wash With a Salicylic Acid Cleanser to Prevent Acne

When it's hot and you've been sweating all day, it's important to wash your face once you get inside. "I like products with salicylic acid because it penetrates the oil glands and decreases oil production," Dr. Bhanusali said. "It also rids pores of pollution and debris."

We like the Paula's Choice Clear Pore Normalizing Cleanser [4] ($13).

Use Dandruff Shampoo to Prevent Acne

One surprising tip that Dr. Bhanusali shared was using a dandruff shampoo as body wash. "If you're breaking a sweat, you can use a antidandruff shampoo that contains zinc parathion in it to prevent yeast and fungal acne caused by the bacteria," he said.

We like the Dove Clean & Fresh Anti-Dandruff Shampoo [5] ($6).

Pick Simple Sunscreens to Prevent Acne

While wearing sunscreen is vital when you spend time outdoors, Dr. Bhanusali suggested staying away from any complicated formulas. "Simple sunscreens are the best; there's no need for anything complex or scented when protection is the most important thing here," he said.

We like the Everyday Sunscreen SPF 50 [6] ($48).

The Ordinary Retinol 0.5% in Squalane

If you've been using acne-fighting ingredients that can cause sun-sensitivity, like retinol, Dr. Bhanusali suggested you should halt prior to your day outside, or switch to another antiacne product.

We like the The Ordinary Retinol 0.5% in Squalane [7] ($6).
