How to Do a Messy Side Braid

Why Not Try a Messy Side Braid?

There's no denying that braids are having a moment. While there are countless ways to wear this twisted style, I'm really liking the casual sophistication a side braid provides to a look. Take Nicole Richie, who wore the messy-on-purpose version to the launch of her Winter Kate collection in Paris. She joins the ranks of other stars who've worn similar hairstyles as of late, like Rachel McAdams's bouffant, Kate Bosworth's fine-haired interpretation, and Leona Lewis's fish-tail. Get some tips for re-creating the look at home when you read more.

  • First, spritz on a texturizing wax or spray, like Sally Hershberger Genius Spray Wax ($12.50). For full volume, tip your head upside down and lightly blow-dry your locks while the product is still wet.
  • Next, create a deep side part, and then section off the face-framing layers from the back of the hair. Braid the back section at an angle so that it sweeps from one side of the nape to the other.
  • Tease or curl the front sections to create the desired effect of tousled tresses, and lightly break up the tightness of the braid by using your fingers to separate the strands. Spritz with a medium hold hairspray for further hold.
  • For a slightly different way to do the braid, check out BellaTV tutorial now.
