How to Fix Hair Color Mistakes

You Tried Crazy Hair Color . . . Now What?

We're happy to present this story from our friends at Allure:

Katy Perry's blue hair is still going strong, but others are ditching — or at least taking a break from — Crayola hair. Rihanna (whose hair has been fire engine red, then bleach-blond) and Lauren Conrad (peach and rainbow-colored) are now jet black and blond, respectively. In light of this return to normalcy, we asked Amy Huson of the Marie Robinson Salon in New York City how to recover from extreme color. Get her tips when you read more.

If you're blonde with pastel streaks: That's easy. Most salons use stains like Manic Panic to create the look. "It should wash out at home within a few weeks," says Huson.

If you're blonde with vibrant streaks: This one requires a trip to the salon, but it's also a simple fix. "Ask for a really mild bleach shampoo to loosen up the color," says Huson. "That will make it more of a pastel, and then it should fade away on it's own."

If you're a brunette: This is trickier. "Whether you did your whole head or just a few streaks, your colorist had to bleach the hair out first," says Huson. Get the color stripped away professionally, and then dye your lightened hair back to match the rest. "You're going to spend a chunk of time at the salon," she warns. The good news: You won't be further damaging your hair since bleach isn't necessary.

In Katy's brightly-colored camp? Try softening up the look with pastel shade for Summer. "But ask your colorist to start with something a little more vibrant than pastel, because you'll be surprised how quickly it washes out into a pastel all on its own," she says.

She definitely takes risks and loves to change her hair, but I would worry the whole time that the weave would come out of the ponytail.
