There are few things more frustrating than spending 40 minutes styling your hair into perfect, effortless-looking beach waves [1], then stepping outside to watch the humidity ruin the style in 40 seconds. Because we understand your struggle, we consulted celebrity hairstylist Patrick Kyle [2] to find out just how he fights frizz on his clients like Zara Larsson and Ellie Kemper.

Turns out, all it takes is a few key products and techniques to ensure your hair stays in place even on the hottest days of Summer. Check out Kyle's expert advice for avoiding frizz no matter your hair type, as well as what products [3] to use, ahead.

What is Frizz?

Anyone can get frizz, no matter your hair type or texture. It's especially likely to happen when your hair is craving moisture, especially during the Summer months. While humidity can make frizz worse, the health of your hair can also contribute to it. "It can be caused by static, breakage, split ends, and thirsty hair," Kyle said.

How to Prevent Frizz For Fine Hair

Those will ultra-fine hair will benefit from hairspray with a heavy duty hold, like the Dove Extra Hold Hairspray [4] ($5). "Spray a little on a boar bristle brush and comb through from roots to ends, with a little extra on the roots," said Kyle.

How to Minimize Frizz for Curly Hair

Those with curly hair might be familiar with the frizz battle, because this hair type tends to need more moisture. Kyle suggested using extra hydrating cream in your comb-outs and using a diffuser like the Drybar The Bouncer Diffuser [5] ($34) to dry your curls. And if you can't fight it, embrace it. "Don't be afraid of a little frizz — it's humid," he said.

How to Prevent Frizz For Thick Hair

If you've got thick hair, Kyle suggests using a styling cream like the OUAI Finishing Crème [6] ($24) to keep things smooth. "Run it through the middle of your hair to the ends," he said.

How to Fight Frizz When It's Humid Out

When everything else fails, Kyle suggested spritzing a toothbrush with some hairspray and taming down those little hairs.

He also stressed the importance of keeping your hair well hydrated and healthy. "If you're seeing split ends, it's time for a little trim," he said. "If you have color damage, give your hair a moisture treatment mask every other week."

Hairstyles to Wear When It's Humid

When you simply can't bare to see your hair look frizzy anymore, there are hairstyle options that will minimize the fuzz. "Top knots, pony tails, or anything to get your hair off of your neck and back is the way to go," Kyle said.
