The Dry Shampoo Method I Use to Wash My Hair Way Less Often

May 6 2018 - 4:15pm

Washing my thick hair takes forever and is one of my least favorite chores. I've tried every dry shampoo, clarifying shampoo, and technique under the sun to try to extend my time between washes, and I've finally got my routine down. It works so well that several of my coworkers have been shocked when I revealed I hadn't washed my locks in four or five days.

The most important discovery is that I've finally found a dry shampoo that really absorbs all of the dirt and oil from my head. After reading several recommendations of the DryBar Detox Dry Shampoo [1] ($23) on the Sephora Beauty Insider Community [2], I quickly switched over to this spray and will never go back.

Keep reading to find out how I successfully put off washing my hair to once or twice a week — without it looking like a greasy mess.

I section off my hair

If I don't want to wash my hair but my roots are starting to look a little greasy, I jump into my nightly dry shampoo routine. First, I section my hair, leaving the bottom layer out and putting the rest up in a soft scrunchie. I spray at the roots of my hair, making sure to not hold the spray bottle too close to my head.

I repeat with a new section

Next, I let down another layer of hair and spray my roots again. Holding the can at least two feet away from my head, I spray my roots thoroughly.

I make sure to get the back pieces

To ensure the back of my head doesn't look oily, I grab sections of my hair, lift up, and spray them with the dry shampoo.

After I let down the rest of my hair, I work the product into my hair with my fingers. I scrunch my roots with my fingers and shake out my hair.

I put it up with a scrunchie

After I've made sure to cover my roots with dry shampoo, I put my hair up with a scrunchie. The scrunchie doesn't crease my hair and is soft enough to comfortably sleep on. If you see sections of your hair with white powder, don't worry about it, it will be gone by morning. When I wake up in the morning, the oil is fully absorbed and my hair is full of volume.
