How to Wear Berry Lipstick

3 Tips For Making the Berry Lip Trend Work For You

Learn how to do the berry lip trend right in this helpful post from Allure.

In my opinion, berry lips are the sexiest trend this fall (and Emma Watson, pictured here at the premiere of The Perks of Being a Wallflower in Toronto, apparently agrees). But that doesn't mean you should just slap on the first tube of blackberry lipstick you see. We talked to celebrity makeup artist Molly R. Stern for her tips on making this vampy style work for you — without looking, well, like a vampire. Get Molly's tips when you read more.

Pick Your Berry
Blackberry, raspberry, boysenberry — what's your jam? It all depends on your skin tone. If you have fair skin, choose something that's dark but sheer. "This will keep you from looking like a character out of a Tim Burton film," says Stern, who loves Tarte Lipsurgence Lip Tint in Moody. Medium skin tones can get away with a richer, truer berry, like Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Empress. And those with dark skin should choose a deep color that won't blend in with their skin, Stern says. She recommends Nars Lipstick in Scarlet Empress — a full-bodied wine shade with rich red undertones.

Keep Lips Ripe
If you have thin lips, a dark lipstick could make them appear even smaller. So start with a sheer stain and use a lip pencil to fill out the lip ever so slightly. "Just don't overdo it," Stern says. "You don't want to end up with a clown mouth." You can also dab a lighter colored lipstick on the center of your mouth to make lips appear fuller.

Don't Forget Your Cheeks
Unless you want to look gothic, the key to wearing a berry lip is to keep the rest of the face fresh and glowing. Use a sheer foundation and concealer and skip powder entirely. Then apply a blush in a complementary shade. If you're stumped, take a trick from makeup artist Dick Page and simply sheer out the same lip color on cheeks.
