Josie Maran on the Beauty Lessons She'll Pass Along

We are excited to bring you another post by model, entrepreneur, and guest blogger Josie Maran! This week, she's talking about the beauty lessons she hopes to pass along. Take it away, Josie:

One of my biggest beauty role models is my mom, so I can only hope that my daughter, Rumi Joon, one day looks at me the same way. With over 17 years in the modeling industry, I’ve obviously spent a lot of time in the makeup chair. But what I’ve learned is that real beauty comes from within, and that’s something I hope Rumi comes to understand as she grows older. I want her to feel comfortable in her own skin, and to not be afraid to wear bold colors, try new products, and define her own style.

To find out how being pregnant contributed to the ethos of Josie Maran Cosmetics, keep reading.

It was perfect that I launched my cosmetic line when I was pregnant with Rumi; I like to think that she will always have this strong connection to the line. At the time, I was especially aware of the products that I was putting in and on my body. I wanted to use only natural personal care products and eco-friendly, non-toxic makeup to stay as healthy as possible for Rumi. I wanted to make a difference not only for myself but for our environment, too. I wanted to contribute to making positive change, and I also want to create something fun, beautiful, and luxurious. I had always had an interest in natural cosmetics, but during my pregnancy my world changed, and I hope this sense of awareness rubs off on my daughter. I want her to understand the importance of using natural products that also give back to the earth.

One of my all-time favorite beauty products is lipstick. It’s classic and I’m happy it’s making a comeback! When I launched my line, I named one of our argan-infused natural lipsticks after Rumi. Today, the sheer pink-beige hue is one of my best-selling shades. I hope she wears it one day!

While I like her motivation and idea, and her products are a better option than most cosmetics being sold, the ingredients are not completely natural or safe. A major example is the Josie Maran Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 30 with harmful ingredients such as: The chemical sunscreens Avobenzone, Octinoxate, Octisalate; BHT and Dimethicone (which both are horribly considered by the FDA to be "safe" as food additive.) The sunscreens used in the product are not natural options and are being shown to have harmful effects on the bodily system such as absorption into cells and blood stream; one study showed Avobenzone may even be helping in the creation of cancerous lesions and aiding in heart issues. So I question Josie's intention when she allows them to not only sell products under her name with these harmful items but works to market them as "natural". What about a zinc sunscreen instead? Removing BHT and sourcing from extracts?
