Is There a Link Between TV and Plastic Surgery?

A new Yale University School of Medicine study followed 42 people through their initial consultations for plastic surgery, and found that they were more likely to watch television shows about surgical makeovers such as Dr. 90210 and Extreme Makeover:

Only 12% of those studied had never seen a cosmetic surgery show; 79% reported that television influenced their decision to pursue a cosmetic operation.

The research team also found that people who watched frequently always thought they knew more about the pros and cons of surgery. While the study doesn't find a direct causal relationship between TV viewing and the decision to get surgery, I'm going to go ahead and make this observation: I think the shows have made plastic surgery more socially acceptable, which may make people feel more comfortable with the decision to go under the knife. (Then again, there's a strong argument that these shows, with their magical transformations, imply that happiness is just a nip, tuck and snip away.) Either way, this study gives a new meaning to the phrase 'boob tube.'

Watching those shows don't make me want plastic surgery, being in Orange County does.

I watch these shows all the time but I don't know if I'd ever have the courage to have anything done. I always talk about it but I don't know if I could ever do it b/c you can't just go back to the way you were if you somehow didn't like the new look. It's all too risky to me.

I think these television programmes have definitely made it more socially acceptable now to get some work done, compared to a few years ago. Sometimes I end up thinking of what I'd like to get done while I'm watching Extreme Makeover-type programmes!

Au contraire! I've watched Dr. 90210 a couple of times and seeing a breast augmentation surgery almost made me sick: it was awful the way they treated that poor woman, laying there unconscious while they pulled and pushed her all over the table! I don't know, it was just horrifying. Plus the way they talk about the patients, so generic, they always say the exact same things about everyone. I know they perform the same surgery all the time, but gosh, they have to find other adjectives besides "beautiful", "great", "amazing" and "spectacular".

The more I watch these type of shows, the more I desire to have some sort of "enhancements" where I want to be enhanced like my breasts and a little 'chop off" off my chin (I have a long chin). And whenever I tell this to my husband, he'd say "Don't change the look I have fallen in love with, I had loved you with that look since I met you',,,,Sigh...'romantic'. But you know, I think thats what really matters. Somebody who accepts you the way you are---with all those flaws and imperfections.
