MAC And Rodarte Donate All Profits To Help Women in Juarez 2010-07-30 13:15:47

MAC To Donate ALL Profits From Controversial Rodarte Collection

You've probably heard about the controversy over the forthcoming MAC/Rodarte makeup collaboration. Long story short, the Mexico-inspired collection included nail polish colors called Juarez and Factory — which, when paired with the ghostlike marketing imagery, recalled for some the brutal murders of thousands of female maquiladora workers in Juarez. After apologizing and agreeing to change both the names and the marketing materials, MAC has now announced that all global profits from this makeup collection will be donated to a newly created project in Mexico.

To find out what's next, keep reading.

Last night, MAC execs met with Mexican government officials to apologize and offer their support. The company is teaming with Mexico's CONAVIM (Comisión Nacional Para Prevenir y Erradicar la Violencia Contra las Mujeres/National Commission to Prevent and Eradicate Violence Against Women) to devise a system that provides grants to organizations that assist women and girls in Juarez. In a statement, MAC President John Demsey said:

We are deeply sorry and apologize to everyone we offended, especially the victims, the women and girls of Juarez and their families. We have heard the response of concerned global citizens loud and clear and are doing our very best to right our wrong. The essence of MAC is to give back and care for the community and our initial handling of this makeup collection was not reflective of MAC's values. MAC and Rodarte are committed to using these learnings to raise awareness on this important issue and to leverage our unique platform to help the women and girls of Juarez."

When the collection lands in stores this September, will the gesture by MAC and Rodarte be reason for you to look at the collection?

I also think MAC handled the apology well. Sourcherries, all of the profits from this collection are being donated -- so all sales will benefit the new initiative.

How much is Rodarte kicking back?

I think MAC handled it well. I also think MAC and makeup in general is inspired by color/ideas/areas... Art is not politically correct and art is what makeup is to me. People really need to not be so ridiculously sensitive.

Um...I still don't see the huge deal. I'm "brown" and a Texan, if you get my drift, and that color would be invisible on my skin. That's all I know.

It really does support the supposed "stereotype" that the fashion industry is based on complete stupidity. It reminds me of when Project Runway winner Seth Aaron said his collection was inspired by the German military of the 1940's and not a single person on the show said "Wtf? You mean it's about Nazis?!?" Blarg.

^^ Seriously. I keep wondering if this was done out of heartlessness or brainlessness.

Considering everything, MAC is handling this with a lot of class. They really listened to their customers and their prospective first-time customers and issued not only a heartfelt apology but a generous donation as well. Not every company does this so I applaud MAC. I may not be a customer of theirs yet, but they get major props in my book. Well done, MAC, well done.

It's a thoughtful response to a thoughtless collection.
