Nail Art Tips and Tricks

The Dos and Don'ts of Nail Art

Nail art is no passing phase, which is why we turned to Stephanie Lavery, the editor in chief of Nail It! magazine, to tell us the dos and don'ts of artful manicures. She dishes on all sorts of nail tricks and tips, from at-home to professional polish jobs and even nail safety.

Do try nail art, even if it's only with an accent nail. There's a look for even the most conservative workplaces.
Don't relegate nail art to the ring finger only; try the pinkie or pointer for something different.
Do have a pro perform a caviar design with gel or acrylic for a longer-lasting manicure.
Don't expect a caviar manicure done with regular polish to last more than one night.
Do combine various types of nail art in one design. Using polish, decals, and 3D elements like rhinestones together will add dimension to your nail art.
Don't feel that every nail has to the look the same. Creating variations in color and design on each nail provides visual interest and keeps the nails from looking too matchy matchy.
Do go to the salon to get your gel polish removed. If you had the service done in a salon, then a pro will know how to remove it safely without damaging your natural nails.
Don't pick it off!
Do keep a bottle of cuticle oil at your desk, in your purse, or by your bed for twice-a-day application. Cuticle oil will keep your nails strong and your cuticles moisturized to reduce the chance of hangnails, cracked skin, and dry fingernails.
Don't leave your nail polish on for longer than three weeks. It can dry out your nails.
