The ad campaign for Avon's latest fragrance, Eternal Magic ($24), is all old movie-style ads with Zoe Saldana in gowns. And there is something old-fashioned about Eternal Magic: it's a warm, nonfruity floral, which makes it a bit of a throwback.
It opens with a burst of artificial "flower" scent, which then, thankfully, becomes an altogether sweeter and more pleasant blend of orris root, vanilla, and warm wood. (If you've never encountered orris, the easiest way to describe it is to say that it smells like a less sweet version of those French violet candies.) As the scent dried down, what remained was a very soft, pleasant skin scent that gave off hints of sweetness, sandalwood, and cedar. This is the sort of perfume you buy not because the first few minutes are great, but because the drydown is much nicer than its price point suggests, and it's great for all-day wear.
