Philosophy Handmade Lemon Custard Hand Cream

Product Review: Philosophy Handmade Lemon Custard Hand Cream

I'm a big fan of Philosophy products. I love the packaging, the cutesy names and the way the company always creates such festive items for holidays and celebrations. However, I've found one product that I just can't stand behind. Their Handmade Lemon Custard Hand Cream ($10-$18) has a milky, lemon scent that has a past-its sell-by-date food smell. Mom always told me never to mix lemon with milk, and this is a perfect example why it's a bad idea.

The formula is outrageously thick and although most of the lotion absorbs quickly, what remains is a fair amount of white, waxy residue that looks like clotted curdle in your cuticles. Not only are you left with an itching desire to wipe your hands on your legs (anything nongreasy), but when the smell sets in, you'll be running for the hills to find a sink. I've told you before that I'm a big hand cream gal, but this shea, mango, and cocoa-butter lotion leaves me with nothing but a sour taste in my mouth.

I actually like the smell of it but I was disappointed with it's moisturizing abilities and texture.

Actually, I love this product and I love the scent. I have a terrible problem with dry hands, and this has been amazing to help them. The scent reminds me of a lemon merangue pie. In fact, I kept craving it every time I put it on for a while. Everyone's tastes (and scents) are different, as well as everyone's skin, or there wouldn't be so many different products out there.

Hmm... I'll have to give this one a whiff next time I go to Sephora. But anyways, philosophy's fragrances are kind of hit-or-miss with me. I think all their perfumes smell horrible(ok, well maybe just a huge waste of money) lol But most of their shower gels and lip glosses just smell lovely. Vanilla birthday cake lipgloss is one of my faves!

I haven't been too thrilled w/the Philosophy products I've tried and the main complaint was the smells. They were all miss for me.

I liked the lemonade hand cream they had last summer. This one doesn't sound very appealing. I just bought B&BW's Glove me Tender hand cream yesterday, and I think it has a light lemony scent to it. I really like it, plus it has SPF15 :)

If you're looking for a lemon-scented hand cream, the Dr. Watkins Lemon Hand Cream is's sold at Target and smells like lemon-sugar cookies. It's a little thick too, but it absorbs fairly quickly. I'm obsessed with it.

Well the texture sounds bad, but the scent? When I think lemon and milk (cream) I think of something yummy like lemon ice box pie

Hmmm. It sounds nice, but...I'd use a free sample, maybe.

Ugh. Lemon and milk is generally a nasty smell, I agree. Shame.

Glad to know this! I use the Red Velvet Cake everyday, which is unusual for me, because I don't like smelling like that, but it is not very strong at all, just soft and the texture is amazing and makes your skin so soft.

I totally agree with your entire post! I'm a faithful user of the Philsophy line but I was once given this as a sample and couldn't even find anyone to give it to.

Yikes...yeah, Philosophy's scented products are usually hit and miss for me. Then again, I typically don't like smelling like food. Have to admit that I'm curious about their three in one Red Velvet Cake...and I recently ordered some in the Inner Grace scent, which is DIVINE for a nice relaxing evening bath or shower.
