After a fresh manicure, we often take a "nailfie" and share it with our Instagram followers (we crave those "likes"!). The men in our life used to roll their eyes, but now dudes have a powerful reason to do the same thing. Polished Man, a new campaign by nonprofit organization YGAP, is raising awareness of child abuse by asking guys to post pictures of themselves with one fingernail painted.
After YGAP's CEO Elliot Costello visited human-rights organization Hagar International in Cambodia, he met a young girl named Thea, with whom he played tic-tac-toe for hours. Before they said goodbye, Thea painted all of his nails blue. Costello was then inspired to start Polished Man.
According to the campaign's website, one in five children suffers physical and/or sexual violence before the age of 18, and 90 percent of sexual violence is committed by men — often by someone the child knows. By painting one fingernail a bright color, men can draw attention to and start a conversation about this global issue, and their friends can donate to the cause. The organization hopes to create a community of positive male role models who support equality.
In the past, celebrities like Alec Baldwin, Mario Batali, and former New York Jets player Tony Richardson have supported YGAP. This year, actor Chris Hemsworth, his brother Liam, and Zac Efron have all shared that they'll participate in this year's campaign, which will run throughout the month of October. After signing up the guy in your life to become a Polished Man, read on to see some of our favorite snaps from dudes who are supporting the cause.
