Solange Knowles debuted some incredible hair (and vocals) on Saturday Night Live. Her hair, which was braided around a hoop on her her head, was adorned with an elaborate web of beads and resembled an ethereal-looking halo.
In an email interview with The Fader, Solange's hair artist Shai Crowe revealed details about this stunning moment. Crowe said that it took over 40 hours to braid and bead Solange's hair with Swarovski crystals. The stylist relied on 100 feet of hair and approximately 2,000 crystals! Crowe's hard work definitely paid off, as Solange's halo was a standout piece of her performance.
The intricate style was partly inspired by images of bedazzled clothing that Solange had sent her. But it was also a nod to Crowe's powerful "Braids" series, a collection of black-and-white photos which was recently on exhibit at Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts.
The gorgeous "Fingerwave Saint" portrait features a model with a halo made of braids posing as the Virgin Mary, and bears a close resemblance to Solange's look. Solange appeared equally as angelic with the glamorous addition of crystals to her hair sculpture.
In an interview with Fusion, Crowe explained the significance of braids in black culture. "Because [braids] are coming out in pop culture and being exploited as a trend in the fashion scene, I think it's important for me to honor them, before there's a time when people don't even remember them as a traditional black art."
It's unsurprising that Solange chose to work with the stylist and artist, considering her vocal stance on embracing her natural curls and the release of her music video "Don't Touch My Hair."
