Is Sun-In Back?

Raise your hand if you've tried Sun-In. My hand is raised — and so were my mother's eyebrows when I tried several squirts of the hair lightener back in junior high. My locks transformed into a rusty orange tone, and it wasn't pretty.

It always seems that everything old is new again. Remember how crimped hair was so well-represented at 2009 Spring Fashion Week? Well, if that wasn't old-school enough for you, word is that everyone's favorite low-cost beach spray, Sun-In ($5), is making a comeback. My advice — unless your hair is already blond or lighter brown, head to the salon for any and all attempts at lightening your hair. You know, unless you totally dig a carrot top.

i had an unfortunate incident with sun-in in '98, during which my hair turned bright orange. i give my best friend extra props for befriending the girl with orange hair that summer. ha ha ha.

OH NOOOOOOOOOO, Sun In!!!!!!!!!! Ugh, it was just for dirty blondes back in the day. It never worked for brunettes and turned hair red or orange. Most people I saw who used it had yellow blonde hair, not golden. Things like this and lemon are far too harsh for the hair, rely on using a lavender tint shampoo to keep hair fresh and stick with your hair dye.

Yikes! I used it.. I even have blonde hair already, but I still got icky coppery streaks. I had to go to the salon to have my hair died my natural color! I learned my lesson...

And people, you can just use lemon juice and the sun. That always works. Put it in a spray bottle or just squeeze it in your hair.

Bath and Body Works used to make a lightening spray that worked very well. I do not know if they still make it.

The first time I died my hair light blonde (I am a natural dark blonde), I used sun-in. It worked great but it does really destroy your hair. I just bought it again about a month ago. I wanted to just go a little bit blonder and I don't want to spend like $100 at the hair dresser for highlights. You really have to use it a lot to get your hair lighter though. I used it three times and so far my hair is only a tiny bit lighter. But at least not orange.

I knew someone who is very blonde and her hair turned into an orangey-strawberry blonde color. And my mom's friend is dark blonde and manages to turn her hair a nice light blonde color with this stuff. Conundrum! I'm blonde, but I'm too scared to try this stuff. I do not need orange hair. Ever.

Eew. I'm just finally recovering from my sun-in experiences... back in 1998. The memories, oh the memories! I don't even have dark brown hair. (It's more dirty blonde.) and I still ended up orange.

I never tried Sun-In, but a roommate did back in the day and it didn't look so good. This packaging is hilarious.

Omg..I SO wanted to use sun in back in the day when all my friends were but my mom forbade me. I secretly kept coupons for it in my drawer whenever I'd find it in the paper, thinking I'd be clever enough to sneak one home. I never did.

Oh yeah! I'm a natural plus highlighted blonde and Sun-In is PERFECT for touching up roots in between salon visits.

I've never ever dyed my hair but I did use Sun-In a few times in middle school and....ICK! An orange catastrophe! My hairstylist was far from impressed when he later cut my hair and saw the mess that I had made!

OMG, I loved Sun-In back in the late '80s! I used to lighten my hair with it every summer...I remember my best friend liking my hair and wanting to try it on her own hair (which was MUCH darker), and it made these hideous orange streaks. It's definitely not for those with darker brown hair!
