Beyond Bronzer: Surprising Summer Makeup Ideas

We're happy to present this article from Allure:

Every year the beauty buzzwords for summer are bronzed, beach-y, and goddess-like, but it doesn't mean that type of Victoria's Secret-catalogue makeup suits everyone's tastes. We consulted makeup artist Quinn Murphy, who's worked with Anne Hathaway and America Ferrera, for summery makeup options that don't require you to break out the bronzer, or anything metallic actually. Get her tips when you keep reading.

Try a neon lip. "The beach-y look is all about soft, monochromatic makeup, but doing something that has high contrast can be just as summery," Murphy says. "Pair a bare face with a neon-colored lipstick, either tangerine or fuchsia, and just add a little brown mascara to define the eyes." Murphy's favorite shades include Nars Lipstick in Schiap and M.A.C. Pro Amplified Creme Lipstick in Neon Orange.

Go naked. Neutral shades don't have to make you look like you have nothing on. This summer, Murphy recommends playing with light and texture when wearing colors like champagne or pinky beige on the eyes. "Then, if you want a little more definition, use a chocolate brown liner in the inner rims so it's almost invisible, and finish with a clear lip gloss," Murphy says. My go-to champagne shade is Cover Girl's Eye Enhancer 1-Kit Eyeshadow in Champagne, but you can pick any shade that is close to your skin tone and that has a hint of shimmer. "You need to have a bit of shimmer so it will catch the light and look like you have a little something on."

Let up on the smokes. You've heard this before, but a lighter, smoky eye is the way to go when playing up your eyes for the summer. "Use browns and grays instead of black," Murphy says, "that way it keeps everything light and fresh, but you still have the idea of dark, moody eye makeup. Go for a natural-colored blush, and then on the lips you can go as light or dark as you please. "A punchy, bold-colored lip gloss works because the eyes aren't black," Murphy explains. But if you want to go soft on the lips, just don't make them too pale. "When working with browns and grays, you need a little color so you don't look dead."

Start blushing. You don't need bronzer to look like you're glowing—cream blush gives that same "lit from within" look if it has a slightly sheer finish. Emphasize your cheeks and leave the rest of your face simple—groomed brows, black mascara, and lip gloss that's just a touch darker than your natural lip tone. If you have fair or medium skin, try a rosy coral color, or if you have a deeper skin tone, raisin shades look especially beautiful. Yves Saint Laurent's Creme de Blush in Powdery Rose is the perfect mix of pink and coral for lighter skin tones, while Make Up For Ever HD High Definition Blush in Innuendo is a red-plum that looks gorgeous on dark complexions. Just remember to set cream blush with transparent loose powder in the summer so the color won't fade as quickly.

I wouldn't powder over cream blush, but powder over some gel or cheek stain blushes is usually fine. The color still shows thru those, but with a cream powder will stick to it and cake. Apply a powder blush of the same shade to prolong the wear.
