I have been a fan of Tarte Cosmetics [1] since the early 2000s. At that time, the brand was limited to just a few offerings, like a handful of shades of the iconic cheek stains. I was especially a fan of its double-ended lip glosses named after famous couples (does anyone else remember and miss those?). Since then, the line has expanded in a major way. The all-natural range now includes high-quality brushes, contouring sticks, and pigment-packed eye shadows and is sold around the world to beauty junkies and newbies alike.
However, Tarte has lacked a matte lipstick in its line. I was sad to see the old formula get discontinued but knew that any new product the brand came up with would be worth the wait. And oh, how right I was. I'm psyched to announce that Tarte is launching Tarteist Lip Paint [2] ($20), a collection of matte liquid lipsticks [3] in a wide assortment of shades from nude to lavender.
My obsession with these is twofold. First off, the shade names are just hilarious and perfect for the social-media-obsessed millennial [4]. There's a nod to the '90s [5] with TBT, an elegant mauve, and a deep cranberry called Hangry, for when you just can't even. But more importantly, the formula is unlike anything I've ever tried — in a good way.
If you've ditched all your liquid matte products because they are drying and feel crusty after a few hours, Tarteist Lip Paints were made with you in mind: these are weightless, velvety, and actually moisturizing. I know that many brands claim that "you'll forget you have it on," but with these paints, that's legitimately true. That said, this isn't a transfer-proof, longwear lipstick. I'm not disappointed, though: it leaves a gorgeous, even stain behind.
