Three Great Insider Makeup Tricks to Try Now

3 Need-to-Know Insider Makeup Tricks

Looking to work a little of your own makeup magic with some insider tips? It's Jillian Dempsey, Avon's global creative color director and celebrity makeup artist, to the rescue. It's always great to have a few in-the-know tricks up your sleeve, so to see some great ideas from Jillian, just keep reading.

  • How to open up the eyes in an instant: This one's an oldie but a goodie. To open up the eyes, apply shadow as you normally would, and then sweep on a dot of shimmer to the middle of the eyelids. For a more modern touch, Jillian recommends using a translucent glimmer so that it's not too heavy or thick-looking.
  • To make your liner more effective: "My old trick that I love, and as a makeup artist it really helps me with my work, is filling in the space between your lashes with a liquid eyeliner, so you're actually not going above your lash line, but between," says Jillian. The idea is that once you apply your mascara, and if you're lashes happen to clump together, no spaces or holes at the base of your lashes will peek through.
  • On the notion that warm and cool colors shouldn't be worn at the same time: "Everyone should customize however they like. As long as it's coordinated to what you're wearing and it doesn't look super ridiculous, I think that's a rule that we can break," says Jillian. Editor's tip: for some warm and cool options, try Marion Cotillard's berry lipstick and gold shadow look or Iman's gold and silver eye makeup look.

One of my "go to" tricks to look more awake is to put a little bit of white shadow on the inner corners of my eyes (sometimes a pencil). It instantly brightens up my eyes and makes me look more awake.
