Tips For Using Hair Pomade

The Right Way to Use Pomade

Think pomade is just for guys? Allure tells you why you should add this to your beauty arsenal and how to use it.

There's this mysterious, waxy thing called pomade. Most people think it’s only for guys. But there are some really cool tricks you can do with it:

Fix flyaways. "Pomade is great to use if you have lots of flyaways on the length of your hair,” says hairstylist Adir Abergel, who likes Oribe Original Pomade. (We also love Oribe 24k Gold Pomade ($49).) Rub a nickel-size blob between your palms, and then run them over your finished style (start in the back so you don’t accidentally weigh down face-framing pieces).

Smooth a side braid. "Braids aren't going anywhere," says hairstylist Mark Townsend. "But they’re more polished than the loose braids we've seen in recent seasons." Gather your hair over one shoulder, and rub a dime-size amount of pomade (hair oil works, too) between your hands before you start braiding. "It makes the braid look sleeker and hold longer," says Townsend.

Mess up a blowout. If you love smooth, polished hair, don't try this. Everyone else: you can give a blowout a cool, piecey finish by rubbing a teeny bit of pomade over just the ends.
