Trend Alert: Visible Roots

Three women, three different ways to get down to the root of things. Jessica Simpson, Beyoncé, and Mary-Kate Olsen each have distinctive styles, but they share one thing in common: A refreshingly low-key attitude when it comes to touching up their roots. Each of these blonde stars can afford to have that "I just left a salon" kind of color, but letting a few roots show feels thoroughly modern — particularly in an economic cycle where pricey highlights are a luxury that many people can't take. So the next time you think about booking a color appointment, go ahead and postpone it a week or two. Judging by these trend-setters' hair, you'll be in good company.

I have natural red hair so roots aren't a problem yet! Messica travels with her gay hairdresser and her roots are in need of touch up and needs to run a brush through her rats nest!

I dye my hair auburn, and if I don't go to the salon, my light blonde roots make it look like I'm going gray!

I hate visible roots on fully dyed hair. It's so tacky to see people with blond hair with an inch or two of brown roots. Highlights don't look so bad since it's normal for naturally sun-bleached hair to grow in darker.

HOW is 'visible roots' a trend?! I am so confused. Beyoncé's makes her look like she's got a wig on that doesn't go all the way to her hairline. Bad.

I think my blonde highlighted hair looks better with a little root. On the other hand, when I dye my hair brown and my dark blonde roots start showing - NOT a hot look. Then it's off to the salon I go!

I don't think it's an attractive trend.

It's not something I would do personally. But I don't "mind" it as much on Mary-Kate as I do Jessica & Beyonce.

to be honest, I think they're just a bit lazy

Blah I hate this look, it's lazy. And seriously Beyonces hair looks horrible.

As long as it's not a dramatic, all-over color and you've left some lowlights it doesn't look bad, just as long as you don't let the roots grow too much. More than an inch is definitely bad. I'm grateful for this "trend" as I don't even go to the salon anymore; I learned how to highlight my own hair at home...and it's a lot of work!!! I'm glad to let more time pass!

Not a big fan of roots and I have to get mine done very often. I think they look kinda trashy. Sometimes depending on the hairstyle you can let it slide for a few weeks, but beyond that, no...

Visible roots look unkempt, not modern.

I don't mind a little root- but I hate when people say its a trend. It's like if people just didnt do their nails or left the color all chipped and gross and then said that its a trend. It's basically just a lack of maintenance that shouldnt be a trend.

I think its ok if your hair has a messy vibe to it, but it looks terrible on sleek styles like Beyonce.

That doesn't look so good and drives me crazy! Maybe it's their idea of lowlights...

i have the exact opposite problem...i dye my hair black, while my natural hair, and thus my roots, are blonde! is that still considered "trendy"? it sure looks bad to me!! i cant stand visible roots!

I have blond hair and dye my hair brown so roots are a no-no for me. I'll admit that there are some to look good with a little (I mean a little) root because usually shades of blond hair naturally look darker at the root (mine did anyways) Beyonce's hair just looks horrible and washed out
