A Hat That Won't Flatten Curly Hair Exists, So Please Hold While We Throw Our Others Away

Throwing on a baseball cap is ideal when you're in a hurry, but that isn't always the case when you have curly hair [1]. Plopping a cap on top of a fresh wash n' go or twist out can make your voluminous curls flat and matted down. It gets even more complicated when you want to pull a coily ponytail through the back of a hat — or if it doesn't even fit.

Laticia Rolle [2], founder of Tress [3], a hat catered to curly hair, knows these struggles all too well. Tress is a range of satin-lined baseball caps designed with curly hair in mind. Rolle told POPSUGAR that her experiences with baseball caps as a child athlete sparked her creation. "I always struggled wearing my softball uniform baseball hat because it never fit my head or curls. Because the hat was too tight, I was left with an embarrassing indent mark right across my forehead and a sad, flattened mess of hair after every game."

A few years ago she was inspired by a similar moment while trying to fight a baseball cap on her head before a date. "At that moment I said I'm going to make a hat for 'us.' Us meaning every woman with beautiful, voluminous texture that can't find a baseball hat that fits," Rolle shared.

Tress [5] takes the struggle out of ruining — and fitting — your curls under a cap. The design of the hat is simple yet smart. It's lined with a silky interior (think: your silk bonnet built in to your hat) that won't disrupt your curls when your cap is on. It comes with three built-in elastics at the closure that make it easy to pull your hair into the perfect ponytail minus the tugging of a velcro or buckle closure.

Because curly hair isn't one size fits all, neither are these hats. They are available in two sizes that you should select depending on the volume and texture of your curls. Unlike Little League head gear, this topper is actually stylish or, as Rolle likes to call it, "the little black dress of hats." It's made of vegan leather and is currently available in black, nude, and a cranberry-red hue [6] that is coming soon.
