This Is the Elegant, Retro Bridal Hair DIY of Your Dreams

Apr 10 2015 - 1:00pm

After you purchase your authentic vintage or Jenny Packham wedding gown, you'll need a throwback-glam hairstyle to match. Celebrity hairstylist and DIY [1] queen Sarah Potempa [2] dreamed up the ideal 'do.

"This Veronica Lake-inspired hair is the perfect way to achieve that Old Hollywood glamour style," says Sarah. "It's a soft yet structured style that can be used for a formal big wedding or a smaller, more intimate ceremony. I love this style because it is a look you would not normally do every day. It holds really well throughout the day. This actually is how I wore my hair on my wedding day when I got married at the iconic Chicago hotel The Drake."

Step 1

Create a side part.

Step 2

Using the Sarah Potempa Beachwaver S1 iron [4], curl your hair. Hold the barrel horizontally, and curl under.

Step 3

Pin curl the section you just did, and continue on with the rest of your hair. Learn how to do pin curls here [5]. Tip: pin in the curve of the wave to set the pattern.

Step 4

Continue curling and pinning until all the hair is done. Let your strands cool, and then take the pins out.

Step 5

Spray a brush [6] with a flexible hair spray.

Step 6

Gently brush [7] curls into a looser shape.

The Final Look

Grab a gorgeous, vintage-inspired pin and clip back your front pieces to look retro chic.
