Viva Glam Lipstick Is Feminist-Approved

Thankfully, it's been a long time since anybody has brought out the ol' tired belief that "real" feminists don't wear lipstick. (Makeup application: so not a litmus test for one's political beliefs.) And now, feminists are applauding efforts from a cosmetics company. At this year's Ms. Foundation For Women Gloria Awards, the MAC AIDS Fund was honored with a Corporate Philanthropy Award for its support of women and HIV/AIDS advocacy.

Through sales of Viva Glam, MAC raises $20 million per year to support people affected by HIV/AIDS. Through the fund, the National Women and AIDS Collective, a policy group for HIV-positive women, has been able to thrive. "To have a corporation like MAC that understands that you can do well by doing good is so important," Gloria Steinem said of the Ms. Foundation's partnership with the MAC AIDS Fund.

In this case, feminism and lipstick go hand-in-hand. To see a (smart, engaging) video of Steinem and MAC AIDS Fund Executive Director Nancy Mahon discussing why HIV/AIDS is a women's issue,

feminism today is NOT anti-male. by keeping up and repeating these stereotypes it hurts the movement, especially when it's women who think these things. feminism is not how it was in the 70s, it has evolved and changed and a beautiful thing. also, Ms. magazine and gloria steinem are not representative of the feminist movement and are not the sole face of feminism. i love Ms. and Steinem, but by making them the face and voice, you are undermining the rest of the movement. (yes, i identify as a feminist, and yes i wear lipstick) that being said, good for MAC and Ms.!

I agree, women should be encouraged to choose family, career, or both. But I don't know any feminists who are anti-men. Anti-sexism, yeah, but not anti-guy. :)

I agree. I think a woman should be able to choose what she wants, and not be put down for it. Whether she chooses a career or a family.. or even both. Do what you want. I don't like that alot of feminists are anti-men and believe a stay at home mom is a bad choice.

Very cool. I hate when feminist is defined as a woman who hates me, shuns make up, doesn't shave, militant, etc. To me, a feminist is someone (man OR woman!) who cares about the welfare of women and thinks they should be equal to men. ... lipstick or no lipstick !
