Styling Ideas That Work When Your Hair Is Wet

Wet hair and Summer go hand in hand, but try out one of these styles from Allure to avoid looking like you were caught in a downpour.

Cooking outside, waving giant sparklers, not working on a Thursday — nothing beats a proper July 4 celebration. And when you're hanging by the ocean/pool/lake/sprinkler, that last thing you want to do is worry about your hair. We asked New York City hairstylist Chris Lospalluto for simple ways to style wet hair without any products, tools, or effort.

A low chignon. "Create an extreme side part and gather all the hair back into a little bun," says Lospalluto. Just use your fingers to part the hair and rake it all back, and secure everything with a small elastic just above the nape of your neck. Then pin it into place with two or three fat pins. And since your hair is already wet, it will lie nice and flat against your head.

A braid. Specifically, a high ponytail that's loosely braided — you can twist and pin it into a topknot or just leave it as is. "When you take it down, you still have your curl," says Lospalluto. Summer is also a great time to let your curls (if you have them) go wild, so if you prefer to leave your hair down, you can "do a little braid at the hairline [crown-style] that goes all the way around your head," suggests Lospalluto. Then leave the rest to air-dry.

Slicked back. To re-create what he calls a "'Stephanie Seymour getting out of the pool' moment, where it's just really wet and slicked back and gorgeous," Lospalluto recommends smoothing long hair back and securing an elastic just below the nape. Your hair will be securely tied off your face but still look effortless and sexy.

Just throw some leave-in conditioner in your bag to keep hair soft and hydrated. We love It's a 10 Miracle Leave-In Product ($17) because it's an easy spray formula. Enjoy the fireworks!
