What to Do With Old Nail Polishes

6 Creative Uses For Your Old Nail Polish

While most nail polish has a shelf life of about a year or two, there are certain things you can do to keep your nail polishes from going bad in the bottle. But if you've grown tired of last season's It shade, or you're looking to simplify your cosmetics collection, there are a few things you can do with past-their-prime bottles before safely disposing of them. Get some ideas when you read more.

  • Label maker: If there are multiple people in your home, you can always use polish to color-code and individualize everything, from clothing tags to toothbrushes. And if you're so inclined, use polishes to color-code your bills and files for easier sorting.
  • The key to keychain success: If you have keys on your keychain that look identical, differentiate them with a swipe of polish.
  • Touch-ups: Cracked vases, chipped pottery, and/or scuff marks on shoes can all benefit from a steady hand and artfully applied polish.
  • Give it away: If you've got a teenager in your life, let her go through your stash of polish and pick her favorite shades.
  • Get crafty: Bring some life back to old picture frames or add some colorful detail to a tired old lamp. Just use your imagination.
  • Coming undone: Buttons that constantly fall off are annoying, but with just a swipe of coordinating polish, you can affix the end of the unraveling thread to the button for good.

I'm going to use nail polish to repaint a pedometer that I got for a campus event. I'm not a fan of bright red, I want to make it purple :D

Nail polish is just solvents and pigment - it DOES NOT go bad. Some of the volatile chemicals may evaporate causing it to thicken. Get a cheapo bottle of polish thinner and you're good to go.

I use it to paint bobby pins. It spruces them up nicely, and it creates an accessory very cheaply.
