What to Expect From a Brazilian Bikini Wax

If you're curious about Brazilian waxing, it can't hurt to try it. Well, actually, it can and will hurt — but that's why I've created this guide to your first time. First of all, let's get our definition straight. A Brazilian wax removes all of the hair from front to back, usually (but not always) leaving a thin "landing strip" of hair a few inches below the belly button. Expect it to cost anywhere from $40 to $80. To find out how much pain to expect,

Read these tips for a painless wax before you head to the spa, and at the very least, take Ibuprofen an hour before your appointment. At the spa, you'll be shown to the waxing room to change out of your pants or skirt (including underpants). For a more modest bikini wax, you'll sometimes get a paper thong; for a Brazilian, you'll more likely be naked from the waist down. If you're like me, you'll feel ridiculous standing around half-naked.

Your waxer will ask you to lie down on your back. That's a good time to ask any questions so that you're both clear on what you want to have removed. After that, she'll probably dust your hair and skin with baby powder, which keeps the wax from sticking to your skin. Most waxers will ask you to assist by holding your skin taut or moving your legs a certain way; some will even ask you to kneel down and stick your bottom out so she can remove all of the hairs there. After the waxing is done, the esthetician will probably tweeze any stray hairs.

As for the pain, I won't lie: It's intense, but it's also fairly brief. It usually hurts more to have the hair on your pubis removed than the hair near your vagina, so be prepared for that. Your hairlessness should last for up to four weeks, at which point you can go back in for another round of waxing.

Anon, no — you should never have skin removed from a wax. I think you and your friend should find a different place, preferably a salon that uses hard wax. It is definitely NOT normal to have skin removed the first time, or any time for that matter.

I've never had a wax, and who knows, maybe some day I will, but right now I'm with the person who spoke about cultural norms. Society doesn't promote men ridding themselves of pubic hair, but starlets, beauty magazines, and porn support an ideal of bare pubic hair. I think grooming for both men and women is important, but fetishizing hairlessness just annoys me. The media attention when Julia Roberts and Drew Barrymore failed to shave their armpits? Argh!

Omigod, I've been going to Russian banyas, and seeing lots of older, naked women there I've sworn to myself NEVER EVER to stop removing all my hair. I guess its kind silly to find it so unattractive, cause guys don't necessarily have to remove their hair, but...ewww. I will never go au natural. :(

I got a brazilian once and it was AMAZING...yes the pubis area definitely hurt, but everything else wasn't bad at all. I think the best part of getting a brazilian is not having hair in my butt! ( i know this may be TMI but i dont care!) It makes going to the bathroom much much easier and I feel a lot sexier and cleaner when I am hair-free in that area. Also, my man will LOVE this! I'm going for my second one on Friday and I can't wait!!!

BTW...I cannot shave it off without waxing it first. I get too many crazy red bumps and bleeding.

I get the brazillian wax pretty often. It doesn't even hurt anymore. The hair takes forever to grow back in and I don't get bumps if I have to shave any missed hairs. I'm also a wuss about pain. The only part that hurts is the front, top section. Everything else is painless IMO. Just have to find a good waxer. No crazy beauty salons...Go to a nice spa.

I get the full Brazilian wax. I have a high tolerance for pain, so it doesn't bother me much. To me, an upper lip wax is more painful than the Brazilian. The removal of the hair on the pubis is the worst part and makes me wince, but other than that, as long as you have a competent waxer, it's really not that bad. And the results are well worth the pain.

My wife is a Brazilian. We just moved to the US some months ago, and she can't stand not getting her regular wax. In Brazil it costs less than $5. So to jump to $40-$80 is way too much. She's tried Veet and isn't impressed. She doesn't like shaving because it grows back too quickly and some other reasons I don't completely understand. She would tell you that, yes, it does hurt, but the woman she went to regularly was good and minimized the pain. So if you're looking for someone to go to, get recommendations first. For my wife, she's got me doing it for her with the home kits now. I didn't know about using baby powder first though. We'll try that next time.

Oh yeah, mine hurt like hell. I'd like to do it again, I mean, it's a pain to keep it shaved neatly, so yeah....

I've gotten a few Brazilian bikini waxes before..but I always end up feeling weird with no hair in the area except for the landing strip. So now, I just get a bikini but have them do a strip all the way down. To me, it just looks better..

Here's a tip: get waxed by a place who doesn't use the strips. If you go somewhere that just uses the hot wax, it's a lot less painful. The wax hardens, adhering to only the hair and not the skin. It can then be directly stripped off. And it's not that embarrassing if it's done by a professional. You know that they're not judging you.

I think I can go as far as bikini waxes but waxing everything off sounds like torture. I've been getting bikini waxes since I was 14 (i was on the swim team) and I'm still terrified of getting a Brazilian. Why not just shave it all off?

They are so worth the cost. I have been getting Brazillians for five years now and my hair is way thinner. I actually think that some of it is not even coming back. I can now go 6 weeks between, with about three weeks of total hairlessness. Don't be scared off by the first one. It hurts, but never like that again!
