Would You Want To Know About Future Hair Loss?

Worrying about hair loss isn't just for guys. Although it's mostly dudes who have nightmares of alopecia, women often experience thinning hair as they age. HairDX ($149, on sale) is a genetic test that predicts whether that's likely to happen to you. The idea is that if you'll probably lose your hair, the test will propel you to get on a prescription to stop that from happening. Think you'd want to know about this, or are you happier to not worry about it?

Eh - it hasn't happened to any of the women on either side of my family for at least the past 150 years, according to photographic evidence, so I'm not terribly worried. And I can't see a self-diagnosis being better than consultation with an actual medical professional, in any case.

i would like to know but i wouldn't do anything about it if the test said yes until it actually started to happen.

you can do stuff about it?? I'm not concerned for myself but we know for a fact that my little brother is going to go bald young. Every male in my family is bald as a cue ball (not just a receding hairline) and started young - by 25 my dad was done. I thought he just had to accept it and enjoy his hair while he has it :) but is there something he can do to prevent hair loss??

At 21 my hair is thinning this does worry me. But I think I would already know what it would tell me. Especially since I've seen determotologists and I've tried everything. But when you feel helpless about something you hang on to any thread of hope.

I am against any genetic test that is sold direct to consumer. Even the genetics behind alopecia arn't straight forward. The genes are inherited differently in man and women. Any one who has this test should talk to a doctor, nurse, or genetic counselor first, so that the results can be correctly interpreted.

Like Apothecary said, I think one can look at their own parents and grandparents for that. I think I'm pretty safe, hairwise.

If you're even going to worry about that, I think that you can usually tell just by looking at your relatives. It's passed through the mom's side, right? My mom's hair is still really thick, although she did go gray really early. This test would probably tell me to set a standing appointment with a colorist starting around age 30 or so.

I don't think it's wise to be getting on prescriptions to avoid everything that may happen in the future. The stress of excessive worrying can lead to hair loss.
