Why This Makeup Artist Strobed Yara Shahidi's Lips With Eye Liner

Leave it to Yara Shahidi to make us want to wear noticeable lip liner again. On Aug. 14, the Blackish actress Instagrammed a look that just completely rewrote the book on how to strobe. That's because the outline of her pout is frickin' metallic. And if you think the glitter lipstick trend is played out or overhyped, Yara's sleek evolution of the style will change your life. OK, maybe not your life, but it will make you want to try strobe lip liner for yourself.

But before you go searching for "Metallic Lip Liner" on Sephora, you should know that Yara's design was created using a different kind of pencil. Emily Cheng, the makeup artist who painted Yara's pout, told POPSUGAR that she actually did so with eyeliner. And the exact shade is fan-favorite Anastasia Beverly Hills Metallic Luster Liner in Metallic Gold ($18), so you might already have it in your beauty arsenal.

According to Emily, applying this product sparingly induced a subtle sheen that allowed Yara's lips to "really shimmer in certain light as she moved." It makes sense that this was a design inspired by motion, because seeing it makes us want to bust out in a happy dance.

When we asked Emily how the heck she made metallic liner come off so chicly understated, she told us that the glitter products reflect light in a way that matte ones don't. Another plus? Translucent shimmer is "a lot more forgiving," so this liner style will never resemble the tragic ones of the '90s. (Pour one out for the Spice Girls' lip looks.)

The strobing is playfully asymmetrical, which Emily says contributes to its "effortless" appearance. (Indeed, this style is so laid back, we'd believe that Yara was born with naturally twinkling lips.) To keep things neat, Emily drew thin lines that "tapered off" at the end. As a finishing touch, she added Chanel Gloss Volume ($30).

Since this gorgeously futuristic statement has captured our attention, we can only hope to see more of the trend this Fall. Now, if you'll excuse us, we have to go put eyeliner on our lips.
