YSL's New Color-Correcting Makeup Will Make Your Skin Look Filtered IRL

Jan 27 2016 - 12:00pm

Over the past few years, it seems like our makeup routine has acquired some extra steps (eyebrow powders and gels [1], contouring and highlighting [2]), but we don't mind. Not only do we find applying cosmetics soothing, these new trends have us looking our best yet! That said, we've always felt like something is still a bit off. Despite incorporating skin care, primer, and a blending sponge [3] into our technique, our complexion just isn't as perfect as those of our favorite makeup artists on Instagram.

You may be thinking that level of perfection comes from formidable lighting and apps like Facetune, but that's not all: color correcting [4] is the secret behind those flawless faces. We had always believed that this was a skippable step, but it's not. Even if you're wearing a medium-to-full coverage foundation and a kickass concealer, imperfections like ruddiness, sallow skin, and dark circles can shine through. But choosing the right pastel hues for your concerns can be very puzzling — where do I put this purple cream? And now where do I put the green formula?

No need for confusion any longer! Yves Saint Laurent has launched six new tinted treatments to take the guesswork out of color correcting, making it as easy as priming your skin or gliding a highlighting pen over your skin. First, it's debuted the Saint Laurent Forever Light Creator CC Primer [5] ($45). This comes in three shades: rose, lavender, and apricot.

Those with fair, dull skin should opt for rose — the fresh baby-pink tint will breathe life into your complexion. Lavender is ideal for ladies who have tendencies to look sick or sallow (purple is across from yellow in the color spectrum, meaning it will cancel out those pallid tones). And apricot will correct uneven complexions for a smooth, radiant glow. Even better, each formula minimizes pores and defends skin against free radicals, and because it contains SPF 35, you'll never have to remind yourself to put on sunscreen in the morning.

We're especially excited about the brand's other release: it's remixed its iconic Touche Éclat pens! The Touche Éclat Neutralizers [6] ($38) also come in three hues: green, bisque, and violet. Be careful — while the primers add an ethereal tinted cast to your skin, these styluses are packed with a more opaque formula, so don't sweep it on like your favorite highlighter.

Dab the green over blemishes, rosacea, or perpetually ruddy skin. Pat a bit of the bisque shade on top of dark circles or dark spots, and use the lavender for areas of your complexion that look drab. Once you apply your favorite foundation on top, you'll see that your skin appears completely perfect — like you never had those imperfections to begin with.
