The Must-See Hair and Makeup Moments From the 2022 Emmys
The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards are in full swing, which can only mean one thing: you're about to fill up your fall mood board with hair and makeup inspiration. With "Saturday Night Live" star Kenan Thompson hosting and a stacked list of presenters like Selena Gomez, Amy Poehler, and Kerry Washington, plus attendees from all of the hottest shows from the last year, you can expect to be entertained from the minute the ceremony starts.
If you recall last year's red carpet, celebrities brought their A-game in the beauty department — from Elizabeth Olson's Grace Kelly-esque bob to Yara Shahidi's abstract nail look — and this year is no different. So far we've seen a dark twist on the french manicure from Issa Rae, major hair color changes from Lily James and Sophie Thatcher, a retro updo from Elle Fanning, and so much more. And this is only the beginning.
Though the night has only just begun, keep scrolling to see the best hair, makeup, and nail looks from the 2022 Emmy Awards.
Lily James's Copper Hair Color
Just two months after going Pamela Anderson blond, the "Pam & Tommy" actor stepped out with a brand-new copper hair color that matched her glimmering Emmys dress. Makeup artist Sofia Tilbury used Charlotte Tilbury to match her glow-up to her makeup.
Zendaya's Milk Bath Manicure
Zendaya was a vision from head to (finger)tips, arriving on the Emmys red carpet in a black Valentino gown and milk bath nails. Her manicure — filed in a short square shape — served as a subtle, yet impactful addition to her look. Her hair was styled by hairstylist Tony Medina, who was inspired by Old Hollywood, "using Grace Kelly's classic silhouette as a reference," he says.
Julia Garner's Bronze Makeup
Not only did Garner take home an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress for her work in "Ozark," she also pulled off a bronzed makeup look with aplomb. Makeup artist Hung Vanngo tells POPSUGAR, "To reflect the rich velvety texture of Julia's dress, I used the new Chanel Les 4 Ombres Tweed Limited-Edition Multi-Effect Quadra Eyeshadow ($88) in Tweed Cuivré by applying it with my fingers for a more intense effect, especially for its shimmer."
HoYeon Jung's Middle-Part Hair Accessory
Celebrity hairstylist Jenny Cho added the perfect addition to Jung's wispy bangs and blunt bob haircut: a pale pink middle-part barrette. "My inspiration for Hoyeon's hair for tonight was to channel Audrey Hepburn — a nod to the classic retro era," she says. Cho used Augustinus Bader Haircare products.
Issa Rae's Black French Manicure
In addition to the next-level glow courtesy of the TikTok viral E.l.f. Cosmetics Halo Glow Liquid Filter ($14), Rae debuted a nail look that combined two of the biggest trends of the moment: the french manicure and "black glam" nails.
Elle Fanning's Flipped-Under Updo
Every inch of Fanning's beauty look was decidedly retro, from her flipped-under pin curls to her 60s-inspired cat-eye. The latter of which was created by makeup artist Erin Ayanian using the L'Oréal Paris Infallible Grip Eyeliner ($12).
Sophie Thatcher's Black Bob Haircut
The "Yellowjackets" actor stepped out in what is perhaps the edgiest transformation of the night, with a new bob haircut in a jet-black shade. Makeup artist Rob Rumsey said this new hair transformation — as well as her Dior dress — was the inspiration behind her makeup look. "We wanted to go with 60s meets the 20s with a rock n' roll vibe," he tells POPSUGAR. "Accentuate her beautiful bone structure and her amazing eyes." Rumsey used all Dior Beauty makeup products.
Kerry Washington's Topknot
While Washington's topknot was sky-high and dramatic, her makeup look was intentionally minimalistic, says longtime makeup artist Carola Gonzalez. She used Neutrogena makeup products to create the look.
Sheryl Lee Ralph's Ponytail Crystals
Hair gems have been all the rage this season, but no one did it quite like Ralph. The Emmy award-winning actor was embellished from the tip of her ponytail all the way across the crown of her head, making sure to add a gem here and there across her eyelids.
Hannah Einbinder's Braided Bixie
The only thing more ethereal than Einbinder's glowy skin was her loosely braided bixie haircut. The former was created by celebrity makeup artist Molly Greenwald using the Shiseido Synchro Skin Radiant Foundation SPF 30 ($47) and Synchro Skin Correcting GelStick Concealer ($31).
Selena Gomez's Emerald Nails
Selena Gomez's emerald green earrings matched the next best accessory: her nails. Celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik created the look using a combo of polish colors: first, he swiped on the OPI Nail Lacquer in Emerald Illusion (available in salon only), followed by the OPI Nail Lacquers shades AmazON...AmazOFF and Rated Pea-G (both available in salon only). Her hair was swept up into a loose updo created by hairstylist Marissa Marino using Moroccanoil products.
