One of the main culprits of those unsightly red bumps is infected pores. This happens when impurities get trapped in the pores. A lovely warm shower will help open the pores and get rid of any dirt (even microscopic particles), so your skin is ready for the razor.
Dreaded ingrown hairs can also come between you and smooth skin. The best way to avoid them is by exfoliating regularly in the shower. There are two types of exfoliants on the market — chemical and physical — and we only recommend the latter for hair-removal purposes. Using a scrub removes dead skin cells that often trap hairs, leaving them standing up and ready to be cut. It's important to use the right product for your skin type and for the area of your body you aim to exfoliate.
Here are some good examples of what type of exfoliator to use on what area of the body:
- Face: soft-bristle facial scrub brush or a facial exfoliator with microbeads
- Underarms and groin area: sugar scrub
- Arms or legs: sugar scrub, loofah, stiff-bristle scrub brush, or nylon bath towel
You may need to try a few out until you find the right combination for your skin. Always remember: the more sensitive the area, the gentler the exfoliator should be.
3. Softening Hair and Skin
Five minutes in a warm, steamy shower is the best way to soften your skin and open your pores. The softer your skin, the more likely you are to avoid friction when removing hair. Open pores make sure all hairs are able to stand upright, which allows for them to be picked up the first time you pass a razor, wax strip, or epilator over them. Less passes mean less irritation!
A good-quality shaving cream will help soften the skin before shaving, but a low-cost shaving foam will most likely dry it out. Always choose cream over foam.
4. Minimizing Friction
Another cause of skin irritation is unnecessary friction while removing hair. The best ways to minimize friction are to always follow the tips listed above. At the same time, a good, thick layer of shaving cream will help reduce tension during shaving, and the application of cornstarch powder to the skin before treatment will come in handy when waxing, sugaring, and using an epilator.
5. Additional Tips
- Never use a blunt or clogged razor. Change your razor blades every four uses on average.
- Remove hair in the direction of growth, and don't pull your skin taut. This will avoid slicing or breaking hairs below the skin level, a prime cause of ingrown hairs.
- Moisturize regularly! Dry skin is more prone to irritation, especially after hair removal, so keep that skin hydrated!

The red bumps and irritated skin that appear after removing hair happen for two reasons: either your pores are infected or your skin isn't getting enough moisture, which leaves it more vulnerable to irritation. Swab the affected areas with Witch Hazel (we recommend Thayer's Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel with aloe vera formula toner). Once it is dry, moisturize the area with pure, cold-pressed argan oil. Both products contain antiseptic, moisturizing, and soothing properties. We do not recommend the use of alcohol-based cleansers or toners on irritated skin and/or infected pores, as they will just dry the area out even more.
