Janelle Monáe's BET Awards hairstyle had a detail you may have missed upon first glance. The singer graced the award show red carpet wearing (like many celebrities that night) the chrome manicure trend [2], but her bun hairstyle [3], which had a wrapped extension weaved throughout, was the cherry on top of their look.

The masterpiece was done by Monáe's long-standing hairstylist, Nikki Nelms [4]. The honey-blond hair styled on top of their head resembled the popular beehive hairstyle from the 1960s. Nelms created a zig-zag pattern with what looks like a faux loc [5] throughout the bun, and the extension went all the way down to Monáe's nape, creating the illusion of a rat-tail hairstyle.

As evidenced by their hair at the 2019 Met Gala [6] and the Grammys [7], Monáe has never been one to shy away from a show-stopping hair moment — but she continues to raise the bar with each red carpet appearance.
