I've Never Contoured Before, but This Gel Contour Stick Just Introduced Me to My Cheekbones

Sep 22 2021 - 11:15am

I've always thought of myself as a relative risk-taker when it comes to beauty. I have microbladed my eyebrows [1], done laser hair removal [2], gotten countless chemical peels [3], and dyed my hair red [4] at one point. Yet, when it comes to makeup, the daredevil inside me seems to shy away. I stick to the same makeup routine [5] day in and day out, whether I'm staying in or going out. While I get tempted to implement new makeup products [6] into my routine, I'm often just too lazy — and don't even get me started on contouring [7]. But, thanks to the influence of TikTok [8], the beauty fan in me has felt more inspired than ever to try new products and tricks.

After the KVD Beauty Good Apple Foundation Balm [9] went viral on the video-sharing platform, I decided to keep up with the brand to see what other groundbreaking beauty items they were going to release. It took me by surprise to see a new contour gel that looked extremely easy to use, and with that, I was the sold. With TikTokers already giving the brand a stamp of approval, I was confident that the KVD Beauty ModCon Liquid-Gel Contour [10] ($26) was a worthy addition to my makeup bag. Here's how I (a complete beginner) incorporated it into my routine.

Before Contouring

When it comes to my everyday makeup, I typically only wear foundation, eyeshadow, mascara, and cream blush. I like to keep it simple so that when I'm not wearing makeup it's not too much of a difference, but for the love of cheekbones, I knew it was time to try contouring (even if my face looks less sculpted when I take my makeup off). As an entry-level contour-trier, I watched this helpful video [11] prior to applying the new product.

During Contouring

I decided to start small, and only do two strokes of contour per side. I did one line right under my cheekbone and another one a bit above my jaw. Much to my surprise, I found the gel went on very smooth, and while the color was pigmented it still felt extremely lightweight. (I expected it to be much heavier.)

I messed up the first line of contour I put on my cheek, so I wiped it away with a paper towel and it came off easily. Since it's so lightweight, I was able to start over without having to take my foundation off or redo it, since the gel didn't set yet.

After Contouring

I used a wet BeautyBlender [12] to blend the contour into my skin. I should note that the product description says to "swipe it on, then use your fingers or a dense brush to blend + build wherever you want to add depth" but since I'm new to the contour game, I wanted my overall look to be more blended than bold — and that's the exact result I got. If you want a stronger shadow, simply use your fingers to blend, and add more of the product as desired.

Finished Look After Using the KVD Beauty ModCon Liquid-Gel Contour

With a more defined jawline [13] and cheekbones to match, it's hard not to love a product like this. Since I started small, I've already decided that I'm going to add more of the product to my skin the next time I use it to get an even more defined shadow.

Still, for a first-timer, the ModCon Liquid-Gel Contour was extremely easy to use and delivered results that are just enough to make a difference. Whether you want bold or blended, dark or dewy, this new KDV product can give you the best of both worlds. Welcome to my makeup bag, KDV Beauty.
