Normani's Hairstylist Breaks Down the 3 Hottest Hair Trends For Fall

Aug 20 2021 - 12:25pm

If the springtime symbolizes rebirth and renewal, then fall signifies owning who you are and being unapologetically you — not just in your actions and your relationships, but in your choices of how you present yourself to the world, starting with your hair [1]. If you've been holding back on what you really want to do — be it a hairstyle, cut, or color — on the account of others, fall is the perfect time to throw caution to the wind and express yourself [2] in your most authentic way.

"This fall is going to be about doing whatever the f*ck makes you happy," Ashanti Lation [3], celebrity hairstylist and part of the team behind the hairstyles in Normani's "Wild Side" music video [4], told POPSUGAR. "Of course, social media hair trends will be a big factor, but this fall, more than ever before, you will see people stepping outside the box of their comfort zone."

Ahead, Lation shared her predictions for the hottest hair trends of the fall [5], so take note, and get ready to do you.

Fall Hair Trend 2021: Bangs

Bangs have been the star of the show for the last year and a half, and this act isn't over just yet. "Bangs are going to be huge this fall," Lation said. "Whether traditional, asymmetrical, blunt, curtain, etc. . . . they all will be incorporated into lots of looks." If you've held out this long on getting the forehead-grazing cut out of fear, this is your sign to call your stylist.

Fall Hair Trend 2021: Extra-Long Weaves and Wigs

When Lizzo [6] pulled out 43-foot braids in her "Rumors" [7] music video, she solidified the "super long" hair trend Lation predicted for the fall. "40"-50" hair will still be a thing for the rest of the year."

Fall Hair Trend 2021: Big, Voluminous Layers

According to Lation, sleek, one-cut lengths are going to be replaced by multilayered looks and "big body hair." "I'm not saying the Farrah Fawcett hair challenge [8] a few months ago had anything to do with it, but I'm also not not saying that either," she said.

No matter what hairstyle you choose for fall, she has a tip for making sure you get the look just right: "If you are going to the salon, bring several reference pics [or] even make a mood board for your desired results to make sure you and your stylist are one the same page."
