There's no such thing as being too prepared — especially when it comes to dye. Before you begin the coloring process, you'll want to take the following steps so your bathroom remains in pristine condition:

  • Try on the gloves that come in the box to ensure they fit snugly. If they're too loose or too tight, replace them with a disposable pair in your size. This will help you grip the bottle better as you’re mixing and also help you apply the color with better precision.
  • Wear an old, dark-colored t-shirt.
  • Line the floor with newspaper or an old sheet.

Just because you've done the bulk of the coloring process in the bathroom doesn't mean you need to remain there for the next 25 minutes as the color sets. Feel free to venture out of the bathroom, and enjoy a cup of tea or peruse a magazine on your couch. But before you do, here are a few tips for keeping your couch spotless:

  • Change into a different old t-shirt from the one you wore when applying your hair color.
  • If your hair is longer than shoulder length, loosely twist hair and secure with a plastic clip.

After you've rinsed out the excess dye completely and the color has set, it's unlikely that any dye will transfer. You'll know you've rinsed the product out entirely when you see the water is running clear as you rinse. Be sure to use the included conditioner afterward, and rinse that thoroughly, too. To be extra safe, you can take a few precautionary measures prior to getting in bed on the first night to ensure your sheets stay white:

  • Make sure your hair is bone dry before sleeping.
  • Use an old, dark t-shirt as a pillowcase.
