7 Fall Hairstyle Trends Worth Adding to Your Mood Board, STAT

For every messy, straight-from-the-beach, IDGAF hairstyle you pulled out this summer, there's a fall equivalent waiting around the corner to zhuzh it up. (We'd like to think of the season as the Jonathan Van Ness to your fourth-day topknot, but, um, in that fun, equally aspirational way.) The biggest difference this season is that the upcoming trends du jour are dipping into the warm-weather pool of hair ideas, bringing lots of texture inspired by everything from your Netflix queue to the '80s to the front and center.

"During the summer, people tend to let go of the rules and set their hair's natural texture free," said Devin Toth, hairstylist at SGK Salon in NYC. "Hair in fall can be a little more playful, edgy, or even ruffled by a hat and scarf, but ultimately your hair this season will require and deserve a little more je ne sais quoi during the morning preparation, because it won't just be tucked away anymore — it will be at the forefront of your overall style."

From the modern-day perm that creates built-in texture to throwback styles like curtain bangs and bouffants, top hairstylists across the country are breaking down the six coolest hairstyle trends to keep on your radar this fall. It's no Summer Friday or rooftop hang, but maybe looking fresh wherever you go is the next best thing.

Fall Hairstyle Trend: Modern Perm

This is not your grandmother's perm. According to celebrity hairstylist and Matrix artistic director Nick Stenson, it's the texture perm — which is a looser curl technique that adds soft, subtle waves with minimal styling — that will rein supreme in the coming months. Toth agrees: "It will add extra bounce and hold for anyone who round-brushes or curls their hair because the starting point of the style is curly instead of limp and flat."

Fall Hairstyle Trend: XL Lengths

Blame it on J Lo (or Kim Kardashian, or Cardi B . . .) but hair lengths are getting the extra-long treatment this season. "Quarantine has allowed many women to give their hair a chance to really grow, and they also have the option to add extensions," said Matrix celebrity colorist George Papanikolas. "Either way, the extra-long hair trend will be a definite 'it' look."

Fall Hairstyle Trend: The "Farrah Flip"

We started to see Farrah Fawcett-inspired hair creeping into our For You pages on TikTok during the summer months, but this style is predicted to carry on well into the fall season. "It's an homage to the '70s and we are starting to see this voluminous and bountiful textured trend popping up everywhere," said Michelle O'Connor, hairstylist and Matrix brand ambassador.

For a modern take, ask your stylist for face-framing layers you can easily blow out with a round brunch. The shaggier, the better. "Lots of volume and layers in bold, warm tones keeps the look feeling seasonal but with a twist," said hairstylist Anabel Santos of Sally Hershberger NoMad. "I especially see this look working on longer hair, with face-framing pieces and long layers blown out to their extremes to create effortless movement and bounce."

Fall Hairstyle Trend: Bows

Unless you've managed to avoid the beauty counter at every major retailer, you've probably already gleaned that hair accessories are a huge trend right now. The particular type of accessory that'll be blowing up your Instagram feeds this fall, however, are bows. "If you're using a bow as an accessory, use textured ribbon," said Ashley Streicher, celebrity hairstylist. "I love velvet because it lends to fall fashion and you can really go for it by using darker colors. I love adding a little texture in the hair, pulling a few pieces back effortlessly, and then tying a knot or putting a bow on it."

For the subtlest — and most retro — take on bangs, try the curtain style. "A lot of people will be adding fringe to long and medium hair lengths," said Streicher. "I love the textured, Bardot-looking bang for staying on trend with the shag. Adding bangs for fall is much easier as the weather starts to cool down, because when it's hot it's hard having hair in your face."

Fall Hairstyle Trend: Bouffants

From Dua Lipa to Anya Taylor Joy to Andra Day, it looks like the bouffant hairstyle is here to stay as the next throwback hair trend making a comeback. The reason is simple: "It's drama, and while it can definitely be over the top, it can be very underplayed as well," hairstylist Sam McKnight told POPSUGAR. "Plus, a bit of height always makes people feel a bit taller, and a bit grander, and a bit more done if you like. And I think the best way to do them, the modern way to do them, is to have it kind of really undone and have it not look too perfect."

Fall Hairstyle Trend: Chunky Headbands

Blame it on the early 2000s resurgence, but thick, chunky headbands are proving to be the season's best easy-to-execute hair trend. Just slip one atop second-day (or third-day, or fourth-day . . .) hair or a messy ponytail, and voilà — an instant style that's quintessentially Zoom-ready.
