Taylor Swift Presents a Modern Take on the Bubble Ponytail

The bubble ponytail is back and better than ever. Take it from Taylor Swift, who wore her own take on the '90s hair trend at NSAI's 2022 Nashville Songwriter Awards on Sept. 20. When the "Blank Space" singer arrived at the ceremony, dressed to the nines in a black sequin Michael Kors gown, we assumed she was rocking a regular ol' high ponytail — but then she turned to the side and struck another red carpet pose to reveal it was actually an upgraded bubble ponytail.

Rather than having bubbles extend all the way down the ponytail as most do, Swift went for just two spherical shapes at the crown of her head, secured with neutral-toned elastics. The rest of her hair was pin straight and, as many fans were quick to notice, much longer than usual, nearly reaching her waist. It's possible the 11-time Grammy winner was wearing extensions for the big night out, during which she won the songwriter-artist of the decade award and performed the 10-minute version of "All Too Well" on stage.

The nostalgic updo is quite the switch-up for Swift, who simply wore her hair down and wavy at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month and rocked a low bun with her bangs parted in the middle at the MTV VMAs in August. Perhaps this signals a new style era for the release of her "Midnights" album?

Bubble ponytails (also called bubble braids) have been a go-to choice among celebrities this year, with Halle Bailey, Blake Lively, and Kristen Stewart all presenting their own versions of the trend. Now that Swift is on board, there's no telling how much more popular they'll become.
