TikTok's Viral "White Concealer" Hack Is Worth the Hype

Feb 8 2022 - 4:55pm

If you've spent any time at all on TikTok [3] lately, then you've undoubtedly come across videos of the white-concealer hack. Popularized by user @bluemarinebae [4], the hack shows people forgoing the traditionally skin-toned complexion product [5] and instead using a stark-white version to the result of perfectly blended and highlighted undereyes.

Now, as someone who has been on the quest brightening up my undereye area [6], this hack immediately stood out to me because of its simplicity. It was definitely a lightbulb moment when I saw that white concealer could just be what I've been looking for all along. However, it seemed almost too convenient (and social media can be deceiving), so I was skeptical of the nonstop videos of people claiming that the hack worked for them. Still, I decided to try it.

I started out by applying a color corrector as I have naturally dark undereyes. I used the Live Tinted Hue Stick in Rise [7] ($24). After blending that out with my finger, I took the KVD Vegan Beauty Lock-It Concealer Crème in White Out [8] ($27) and applied it to the inner corner of my eyes, as well as to the outer third.

I then used the Shop Miss A F19 Highlighter Brush [9] ($1) to blend the white concealer, following my normal concealing direction — down the sides of the nose and out toward the hairline. At this point, I had to trust the process because I was convinced that this hack was not going to work.

I then set my concealer with a skin-toned pressed powder, and this is when I saw what the hype was about. Using the One Size Beauty Powder in Medium Dark 6 [10] ($33), I began blending the powder from the bottom of my check upward, toward the inner corner of my eye. This created a beautiful gradient that made the stark-white concealer under my eyes look almost . . . dare I say, natural? To my surprise, the hack actually kind of worked. I was stunned.

While I am happy to have found a new trick to add to my makeup arsenal, it does come with a few caveats. My first tip would be to control how far you blend out the concealer. While I was following my normal technique when using concealer, I blended the color too low onto my cheek and too high into my hairline. For a true brightening effect, the concealer would need to be in a more concentrated area, not spread across such a large surface area.

Second, when using the skin-toned powder, I highly recommend blending from the lowest point on the face upward, closer to the undereye. When I started directly under my eye area (as opposed to the other way around), this took away some of the brightening effect of the white concealer, so make sure to blend in the right direction if you decide to try the hack yourself.

In all, this was a surprisingly effective technique that I will be incorporating into my routine when my undereye area needs a pick-me-up. I've seen a few variations of this hack where people mix the white color with their normal concealers and top it off with a loose setting powder, so I will be experimenting until I land on a color that fully works for me.
