Getting a manicure, doing your makeup, and even doing a face mask [2] are all pretty standard beauty-prep activities ahead of a big event — but so is bleaching your upper lip. Ahead of the 2020 Emmy Awards, Yara Shahidi [3] shared a video on Instagram of what beauty prep really looks like, not just the glitz and glam parts.
In the video, Shahidi's upper lip is smeared with a white cream as she jams to some music in the background. "Giving you Emmy's prep realness ayyy," read the caption on her video [4]. But Shahidi's beauty prep didn't stop there — celebrity makeup artist Emily Cheng [5] shared the steps that came after it. For Shahidi's skin, Cheng used the Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Pro Facial Steamer [6], followed by the Sisley Paris Express Flower Gel Mask [7], and the Augustinus Bader Face Cream [8].
As for Shahidi's makeup look, Cheng used the new Bite Beauty Yaysayer Plumping Lip Gloss [9] ($25) in the shade Cider Donut, a shimmering golden cocoa shade, all over her lips and layered the shade Sugar Drizzle, a clear gloss with gold shimmer, in the center for some extra shine.
Although this year's awards program will be held virtually, many stars are live-steaming into the show dressed in full gowns [10] and tuxedos and hair and makeup. As much as we love to see the finished look, we're living for this realness.
