Dear Poll: Have You Met a Significant Other at Work?

People, myself included, are always saying that it’s best to date outside of your job for fear of professional repercussions, but when you’re around the same people day after day, it’s inevitable that connections are made. In fact, I have a friend who had never been at a new job without meeting a new guy, the last of whom she married! So regardless of the arguments against it, have you ever met a significant other on the job?

I probably will be working with my husband at least for the holiday season this year so I can get some extra money. I know it's not the same thing since we're already married but I think it counts.

I've had crushes but since I married my first boyfriend I didn't have a chance to date anyone else.

I met my last serious boyfriend at work. It went well- we "came out" 5 months into the relationship to everyone after I accepted a promotion and moved to a different location. All of our coworkers were really pleased, as they thought we really went well together, and we ended up dating for over 4 years. However, things didn't work out and I left him. Gossip ran wild at work. People were seriously upset with me because "I broke his heart." This is after we were working at different locations for years (it's just that sort of place.) So beware- when you date at the office, it's everyone's business, even when you keep it low-key like we did. Things are still a bit awkward, and while the breakup was actually amicable, we never talk, partly because of the outcry at work.

Mine is a long story... about a month ago started dating a co-worker with three kids who just got out of a 16-year marriage. Hard to deal with, considering he isn't through the divorce quite yet but our chemistry is amazing. The heart wants what the heart wants. We are 17 years apart, the kids love me, but of course the work thing is the hardest part! I'm an administrative assistant and he is a manager. The new handbook is coming out soon and I got word that there is to be no "fraternization" between employees. Everything is very difficult because of this and people have definitely sensed things going on... but we keep it very professional. Also, we are very casual considering the divorce. I know it is a lot to swallow, but chemistry is a powerful thing! Someday we will just have to get it out there and people are going to have to deal with it.

i met my boyfriend of 5 years at work. I don't see why people think it's a bad thing. We were mature enough to do our jobs while at work and not bring weirdness to the work place.

I have definitely had crushes on people I've worked with but never carried them on into a relationship. Oh, saying that... I met a boyfriend through a voluntary organisation we both worked for at a meeting. :) Does that count? :)

Not me, but I always thought it would be nice to.

I totally didn't mean to do this, but I saw my now boyfriend walking down the hall at work and I knew that he was The One. I had to ignore my desire to keep work and dating separate because I had to date him. It turns out that he felt the same way about me when he saw me the first time. Now we're together and talking about a life together.

I haven't (well, didn't -- I'm engaged now) dated anyone from my work. That surprises me since I spend so much time at work, and I've seen it happen to most people I work with. I don't think there's anything wrong with it as long as it doesn't interfere with work. Sometimes, that's the only place you can meet someone if you're busy.

I met a cool guy at my last job who EVERYONE thought we were dating when really we were just that cool with each other. We talked about our social lives and what not. Totally nothing going on there.

Yeah...I'm an elementary school teacher. There are no men. It is rather unfortunate.

I met a boyfriend at the hotel I worked at. He was a guest, which was a big no-no, but so much fun and even though our relationship didn't last more than a few months, it never hurt anybody. I've never dated a co-worker tough.

In my younger years (Lord that makes me sound old) between my divorce and 2nd marriage, I had a few "flings" with people I work with, but never EVER a serious relationship. That's just bad news.

I haven't, have always been afraid of mixing business with pleasure. I've had a few attractive co-workers try to flirt with me, but I was always too strict with this rule to pursue it. Damn.

I did...and I wouldn't recommend it unless both of you are secure and not the jealous type. I had a very insecure and violently jealous guy that I dated for 3 years, we met at work and continued to work with each other, and if I even spoke with other male employees or they helped me in doing a JOB then things tuned ugly...very ugly. BUT if you both are able to handle it then it can be very rewarding!

I haven't, but my friend did, and now they're married and she's pregnant with triplets!

Nada. However, I think work is a great place to meet new people, and if that includes a significant other then so be it. Although, you've got to draw the line and hope it doesn't affect the workplace.
