Do Tell: Do You Have Stingy Friends?

I have some overly generous friends, but I also have a few stingy friends — stingy with their time, their money, their food, you name it, they're stingy with it! While I understand the importance of keeping some things sacred, being stingy isn't the best attribute if you ask me. So do you have any stingy friends who take their selfishness to a whole other level? If so, how do you react to their behavior?

i've had friends in my life that were very stingy in what they contributed - if it's a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on or contributing financially to things. i tend to avoid confrontation about that - so if it's a matter of calling someone out on it - i'll avoid that - but i will also sever ties with them shortly after i've reached my limit. i was raised to help in any way i can and if people don't do the same, it bugs me.

I have friends who are stingy about paying the tab at a restaurant or bar. Most friends I go out with it everyone chips in enough that paying the bill is no problem. Other people we are consistently short by $50-80 at the end of the night. And it's hard to call them out on it because I'm not that confrontational and in a big group who can be sure? But one girl who will order $30 worth of food and drink (not including tax/tip) but then throw in $25 I will say something to - I'm tired of paying an extra $20 for my dinner every Friday night!

Hmmm... I have a friend who isn't exactly stingy, but she certainly is selfish. Maybe she's stingy with attention? As in, she only focuses attention on herself, and is only content when others' attention is also on her? Something to think about, perhaps.

the main thing i'm stingy with is my food. and i wouldn't be so stingy about it if i had a job. friends come over and they expect me to feed them while they're here when they know i can't afford it. and when i tell them to bring they're own food cuz i can't afford to feed them...they get pissed! i just don't understand why they do cuz they all live with their parents still and have jobs. unlike me who has no job and is paying my own bills and rent.

I have a lot of friends who are stingy with food. I always have to pay or feed them. I'm a generous person so I don't mind doing it once or twice but when theyre always out of money it really gets to me, especially as I'm unemployed and I try to spend as little as possible when I go out. I've also got another friend who is so stingy with food I'll be at her place all day and not even get a cup of tea. I'm too polite to point it out and I hope my growling belly will get the point across but it never works and I end up binging as soon as I get home! I'm more than happy to feed people when they come over but I thought it was just a common courtesy thing to at least offer.

I don't have any friends that are stingy with anything that I can think of off the top of my head -- but I know I would get a load of complaints for being stingy with time if you were to ask them. They always complain that I don't go out enough, and when I do that I want to go home early. I just want to be like fuck you guys I work, go to school, volunteer, and study every free moment that I have! It is a big deal to get me out to dinner, I CANNOT spend the whole day galavanting around town getting trashed so I can be hungover all the next day. Some of us have real life! My friends on the other hand all have reduced courseloads, work part-time because they live at home, and never study. Guess they're stingy with their ambition!

Nope! And I think it would really irritate me if I did. I think there's a difference between being stingy and frugal. I once dated a stingy guy. He was a serious penny-pincher and it was embarrassing. Needless to say, we didn't last very long for various reasons, that being one of them.

I have a friend who is driving me insane right now with how stingy she is with money. If she were poor or going through a hard time that would be one thing, but the chick drives a freaking luxury SUV, owns 3 houses, and has already saved enough for retirement! Yet she constantly talks about how she can't afford to go out to eat, or she can't afford new clothes etc. Drives me crazy because it's like an insult to people who actually can't afford those things.

LOL. I may be guilty of this. I think I may be stingy with my time. I think it's because I'm an introvert, and prefer being by myself, working on my own projects. I have nothing against my extraverted friends. Naturally, these days, the friends I make are introverts, too. We're more suitable as friends. :)

I used to be really stingy because I work hard for what little stuff I have. Now I just try to keep it even with my friends. If i buy lunch one day or she eats at my house we switch when we hang out again. I'm never stingy with my time because I'd rather be with my friends than anyone else.
