4 Ways to Find Out How Much You Need to Save For Retirement

Do Tell: What Would You Do?

Macmeggy posted a great poll on a topic I love to ask people...If you were to find a suitcase with a large amount of money in it, what would you do?! Of course the "right thing to do" is turn it into the police, but come on! So ladies, do tell, if no one saw you discover the loot, what would you do with it?

If it was just a few thousand bucks or less I'd return everything, I mean, someone could be in big trouble. Otherwise, no way! Someone carrying around a ridiculous amount of money is certainly someone who doesn't need it so bad. I'd keep part of it to myself and send most to charity or something.

well it's wrong to use the money, so I'm gonna be boring too: turn it into the police :)

KEEP IT and send it on over to Sallie Mae! Student loans looming over your head are much more stressful than being caught with an "abandoned" case of cash.

I would take it into different banks and cash it for smaller sums. I wouldnt want all the money to trace back to me. Or take it to like a casino and cash it for one big check. Than I would pay off all my debt, put a big chunk in a mature savings account and than by the most posh ticket to London and get lost in the town.

I'd buy a car and move to another state, and also pay off my debt.

Keep it and pay off my house. Payback time for when I had my luggage stolen at the airport and my car broken into!

I would honestly keep it but donate a large sum to charities that I'm interested in. I would also pay off some debt and put the rest in savings.

Whats so bad about keeping it? Any kind of deal involves cash in a suitcase is NOT going towards a good cause. And no individual with that kind of money is dumb enough to carry it around in cash. If you turn it in, it just becomes money lost in the system. What kind of shady dealer would claim his money at the station? If nobody saw (because you don't want people after you) there's no reason not to keep it!

I would turn it in. Anytime I know that someone has given me back too much change or credited my account too much, etc., I always make it right. When I was little, my mom made my sister return a nickel to the local gas station, when they "over-changed" her. My sister was pissed, but she did it anyway. My mom said, "If you know about it & don't return it, it's the same a stealing!" My conscience would get the best of me & you have to think about your karma! It would be tempting to keep a suitcase full of money, though.

I wouldn't like to take the chance that it's like counterfit or tagged somehow, so I would turn it in. If I was guaranteed that it was "safe" money, I'd keep it.

Well, lets see, no one saw me, hmm... okay, I would probably keep it for a couple of days because I know myself and I would be indicisive about the whole thing, turning it in or not. Then I would consult it with my mom, and she would tell me to do whatever I feel is right, to do the right thing, so I think I would just split the money with my parents and my brothers. I would also donate some money to an animal welfare group or do something good with it, I guess be philanthropic in some way. But of course, if I knew whose money it was, and deemed the person to be honest and essentially good, I would return it. If this person is questionable and really doesn't deserve it, I would think twice about it.

As much as I could totally use the money, I know I'd probably do the right thing and turn it in. Though I like ilani's reasoning ;)

I'd like to stay on the friendly side of Karma, so I would turn it in. In most municipalities, once it has not been claimed you can actually petition to get it if you are the finder. I'd hope for the best!

I would definitely turn it into the police not because I'm a goody-two-shoes or whatever, but because I have THE WORST conscience EVER and would probably be traumatised for life if I kept the money and spent it! However, if I got part of the money as a reward or if I got to keep it because no one else claimed it within a certain amount of time, I would pay off my grad school debt in a second because it is seriously stressing me out!

If I lost I giant sack of money, I would be distraught until I got it back. Therefore, I am obligated by my moral code of do unto others to return the money. I am not heartless, however, and if someone returned my giant sack of money, I would totally give them a couple hundred to say thank you. Therefore, I feel saying that I would turn it in and hope for a reward.

I would keep the money. Possession is 9/10ths of the law. If it was drug money, I know would put it to better use than a drug dealer would. If it was from a bank robbery, the bank's money is insured. As for charity, I doubt anyone would be walking around with a suitcase full of cash for a charity. Chances are who ever had the money was up to no good. Therefore, their lose is my gain.

I would try to figure out who it belongs, too. Then, if that didn't work I would give it to the police. I need to be able to look at myself in the mirror and sleep at night. Also, if I were the one who lost it a ton of cash in a brief case...I would pray someone would do the right thing.

I would keep it. If the money was meant for a charity or stolen, then I would think the original owner would be more careful with it. I would take it, pay off my husband's debt, buy ourselves a house, and tuck the rest away so that we wouldn't have to count pennies every day like we do now.
