Do Your Friends Influence Your Money?

If you're rolling with a spend-y crew, your bank account may be getting more of a workout than if your friends were more mindful of their cash. It can get tricky when your income isn't as bulky as your friends' but you're trying to keep up with their habits and hobbies. Ideally your friends don't care what you can and can't afford, and you're able to spend time with them without spending away your savings. How do their spending habits affect the way you treat money?

No...I just buy what I want, when I want. Most of my friends have similar finances as me anyway. None of us are wealthy, so we save what we can and splurge at times.

My spending habits aren't influenced by my friends' once I stopped doing things (like shopping) that would make me spend more when I was with them. Now I shop alone, and frankly, I enjoy it more and get better things that I really like because I also don't have her influence on what she likes more this or that shirt!

I'm normally the one out of my group of friends that spends the most without really thinking about it. My best friend used to say she could never be like that...until she married a doctor. Granted, she still works, but her patterns have changed drastically.

We're all on a tight budget, so we never go out and do anything together.

When shopping with my friends I usually manage to stay within my budget. But most often they usually splurge or spend more than I do.

I've had to learn to stay within my means even if we're going somewhere that's more than I could usually afford. I'll not order drinks, or split a meal, or just have salad. That way I can still go and enjoy myself but stay in my budget!!

I live within my means regardless of how my friends or family spend. I do splurge occasionally but that is usually my own doing.

Some of my friends make more than I do, which can make it weird when I get the, "She's not going out AGAIN?" look. But, on the other hand, I'm the most financially stable of all my friends and instead of splurging on drinks four nights a week, I'll be splurging on a house in the near future. But, for the most part, it's not a big deal, as I tend to roll with more of a "board game and movie night" crew.

most of my friends make at least double what I make, and while there's no peer pressure or feeling that I need to "keep up", there are a lot of social situations where I end up spending more money than I want to. Someone suggests drinks and then we end up someplace nice and then food gets ordered too, and then I've spent a lot more money than intended. I could go the separate checks route but then my friends just offer to pay, and that feels weird. I hate bringing up the fact that I earn so much less than they do, so I try not to. I think I need to decide that can only go out with them every so often, since inevitably, we'll end up spending more money than I planned.

the only thing i'll really splurge on is meals, so that's when friends try to keep up with me. otherwise, i don't really care about my friend's shopping choices. we're actually bargain hunters.

Most of the people I know are in the same income bracket as my fiance and I. However, some of them are more frugal and have more money to spend on vacations and things like that. I get jealous sometimes, but my fiance tells me that we don't know how tight things really are for them. They could have maxed out credit cards, or be living paycheck to paycheck. Even if I had friends that were super mega rich, like millions, I wouldn't feel like I needed to spend more. You just have to be happy with what you have or do something to increase it.

Sometimes they do... But I think I make about the most out of my friends so I can usually afford to do everything with them. If anything, because they can be so frugal sometimes, I save mroe money just hanging at their houses instead fo going out to the bar :)

I have a mix of wealthy friends and friends that barely make any money, but all of them are low-key so it's never an issue.

I have friends who must have the latest of everything and I certaintly don't try to keep up with them. I have friends who can spend their paycheck in one day!!

Most of my friends live expensively but their lifestyles never influence me. I always stick to my principles. Besides, I may never know what "problems" lie behind those expensive lifestyle coz they may never admit it. And I don't want to have a problem like their problem.

I have had friends who were in the same financial situation but wer eliving outside of their means. I don't really get into that stuff. I'm not a label wh*re nor am I the person who has to have everything the second it comes out so I tend to spend less and have a little more financial cushion.

this might have been the case when i was in college and in close quarters with a lot of girls, some of whom were obsessed with the newest pair of Sevens or Juicy jumpsuit. but now that we are older, this matters less and less. my friends and myself are all in different financial situations, and i am one of the few that went back to grad school. i feel the pinch sometimes--two of my good friends just went to vegas and i decided not to go--but other times i splurge--i bought a phillip lim 3.1 dress (on sale) in front of the same girlfriends who walked out of barney's empty handed. so, it just depends.

my friends are 50/50. Some spend like mad, some are more frugal then me.

Eh it doesn't really apply to me. I have friends that are like me and are more likely to try and save money and others who would rather splurge. I don't let it affect how I spend my money, where I shop or what I buy. I'm my own person.

I definitely feel like I have to spend more in certain situations, while with other friends I end up spending less because they are on a tighter budget than me. It's nice to have friends who like to spend more at a nice restaurant/store etc. but it's nice to have friends where you actually walk away saving money!
