Ask Savvy: How Do I Tell Hirers I Was Kicked Out of School

This post was shared by reader Imnickiegurl in our Ask Savvy group.

A couple of years ago I was kicked out of college.  A  year later I returned to a different school and after the upcoming spring term, I will be finished with my bachelor's degree.  As I started looking for internships and jobs in the accounting field, I am wondering how to address the fact that I was kicked out, and I'm trying to figure out how much will this limit my career opportunities. Any advice?

Ask anything career- or budget-related — well, almost anything — by posting your questions in the Ask Savvy group, and readers and I will weigh in to support you.

I agree, if it comes up (DON'T BRING IT UP YOURSELF), say you left for personal reasons. It WILL hurt your chances, even if it's a story that you could spin to seem like it might not be your fault. It will hurt your chances because the other candidates likely DIDN'T get kicked out of school, and there's a huge stigma to it, so keep it quiet. Frankly, I've never known someone who got kicked out of school and I've been to a couple, so no matter your reason, you're not going to come off as the valedictorian here.

Ahem . . . "I left for personal reasons." You did; those reasons are none of their business. Don't focus on the negative; bring their attention to your positive achievements and performance at your new school. Plenty of people leave school and come back somewhere else, there's no reason to fuss over it.

Would this really come up in an interview? Does in show up on transcripts? I certainly wouldn't volunteer anything. And if asked chalk it up to youthful misjudgment.
