How Do I Act After I Get Promoted?

How to Maintain Proper Work Etiquette After Receiving a Promotion

Yay — you got promoted! Now read these tips from OnSugar blog Beauty and the Budget so you're not committing a promotion faux pas in the workplace.

You might be patting yourself on the back for finally getting that promotion, but don't forget that you will face a few challenges with your new position. Recently, I received a promotion to Visual Merchandiser at Forever 21. It's a fun, creative job and a great starting point for my career in fashion. Even though I feel like I know everything about Forever 21, I still have to remind myself that this is a new job (and new field) for me that I've never done before. Being refreshed on proper work etiquette is always a good way to start that new job!

  • Avoid bragging. Don't brag to other coworkers about your new position. They might begin to resent you for it, especially if you got the job they're after. Instead, ask your coworkers what you can do in your new position that will help them in their job. When we all help one another, companies run smoother.
  • Don't talk salary. In any case, you should always keep this a matter of private business between only you and your boss. If someone asks you, you can provide a vague answer that doesn't give any specific numbers, or tell them that you aren't comfortable discussing the matter.
  • Be willing to change. In your new position, there are going to be some adjustments that you'll have to make. For me, it's coming in at 7 a.m. every week day and sometimes working a 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. shift if we have a new floorset. Since Visual Merchandising is something I love doing, I don't mind it. But the hours are difficult to adjust to.
  • Continue working hard. If you want to keep moving up in your industry, you have to push yourself to work harder. Take on a few extra tasks when you have time, show up early for work, and always ask your boss if there is anything else you can do to help them.
